Farberman, Harold

Harold Farberman, founder and artistic director of The Conductors Institute, studied percussion at the Juilliard School, composition at the New England Conservatory, and conducting and composition at Tanglewood. In 1951 he became the youngest member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra when he joined its percussion section. In 1963 Farberman left the Boston Symphony to embark on a conducting career that has earned him an international reputation. He has been music director of the Colorado Springs (Colorado) and Oakland (California) Symphonies and principal guest conductor of the Denver Symphony and the Bournemouth (Great Britain) Sinfonietta. Farberman has been a frequent guest conductor and recording artist of major orchestras, including the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, BBC, Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio, Danish Radio, Hessischer Rundfunk, and Hong Kong Philharmonic.
For his dedication to the music of Charles Ives through performance and recordings, Farberman was awarded the Ives Medal. His book The Art of Conducting Technique is published by Warner Brothers. His music has been heard in numerous international venues. Albany Records released four CDs featuring his works, and his Cello Concerto was premiered by the American Symphony Orchestra in November 2000 at Avery Fisher Hall.

ALEXANDER FARKAS originally trained as a pianist and currently teaches at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford. A certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, he earned his certificate at the Victoria Training Course, London, Shoshana Kaminitz, principal. Mr. Farkas has been a guest lecturer at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College of Music in London, and the Musik-Akademie in Basel, Switzerland. He also teaches privately in New York City and Hartford.

Translation of the complete poems of Ingeborg Bachmann, Songs in Flight (Marsilio, 1994), selected as an outstanding translation of 1994 by American Literary Translators Association; also translated two novel fragments by Bachmann and an expanded edition of her poems, Darkness Spoken; and novels by Alois Hotschnig, Leonardo’s Hands (University of Nebraska Press, 1999), and H. G. Adler, The Journey (Random House, 2008). Books of poetry include After Homer (George Braziller Publishers, 2002) and What She Knew (Orchises Press, 1998). Articles and poems in American Scholar, New Republic, New Criterion, Paris Review, New York Times Book Review, many other journals and magazines.
