Film/Video. Worked with Julie Dash on Daughters of the Dust, as well as on Spike Lee's Crooklyn and Manthia Diawara's Rouch in Reverse. One of Jafa's projects is the development of what he calls "black visual intonation." His ideas concerning this project may be found in "69," his essay in Black Popular Culture. Jafa is interested in the ways in which a black film culture can be developed that responds to and reflects black ways of life in the diaspora, and investigating what he calls "black artificial intelligence."

Publications include People of the Wachusett: Greater New England in History and Memory, 1630-1860 (1999); Visual Editor, Who Built America? Articles on artists and artisans in early America in The Journal of American History, William and Mary Quarterly, New England Quarterly, Rural New England Furniture, Explorations of the Folk Art World. Project director of two National Endowment for the Humanities grants at The City University of New York to develop multimedia resources for the teaching of U.S. History. Painting/Performance. Born in 1951 in Battle Creek, Michigan. B.F.A., Philadelphia College of Art; M.F.A. in Sculpture, Yale University. John Jesurun is a writer/director/designer living in New York. His presentations integrate elements of language, film, architectural space and media. His exploded narratives cover a wide range of themes and explore the relation of form to content. They challenge the experience of verbal, visual and intangible perceptions. His work is distinguished by his integrated creation of the text, direction, set and media design. Since 1984 he has written,directed and designed over 25 pieces including: the media trilogy of DEEP SLEEP (1986 Obie Award, Best Play), WHITE WATER and BLACK MARIA , NUMBER MINUS ONE, DOG’S EYE VIEW, RED HOUSE, SHATTERHAND MASSACREE, PHILOKTETES, EVERYTHING THAT RISES MUST CONVERGE, SLIGHT RETURN, IRON LUNG, BARDO, SEPTET and SNOW. Other projects include the 2000 staging and video design for the concert performance of Roy Nathanson’s Jazz Suite “Fire at Keaton’s Bar and Grill” featuring Debby Harry and Elvis Costello at St. Ann’s, Brooklyn and Royal Festival Hall, London, the set and video design for the opera “Dennis Cleveland” at Lincoln Center.
