Biography:

B.A., Kalamazoo College; M.A., School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; M.Phil., Columbia University. Author of Open City (2011; winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award and Internationaler Literaturpreis, short-listed for National Book Critics Circle Award); Every Day Is for the Thief (2007/2014; finalist for PEN/Open Book Award); and articles in the New Yorker, Transition, Granta, and other magazines and journals. Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in the Humanities (2001–02); Chinua Achebe Fellow, Bard College (2011). Distinguished Lectureship at Duke University. Photography critic at the New York Times Magazine. Awarded 2015 Windham Campbell Prize for Fiction. At Bard since 2011.
