Biography:

Ph.D., philosophy, University of Michigan; Ph.D., political studies, University of Strasbourg. Professor Magun is chair of the Department of Political Science and Sociology at European University at St. Petersburg, Russia. He also teaches part-time at Smolny College, Bard’s partner institution in St. Petersburg. His academic interests include the history of political thought, revolutions and theories of democracy, philosophy of negativity, Hegeliansism, Marxism, and psychoanalysis. He is the editor-in-chief of Statis, a peer-reviewed journal in social and political theory; and author of the books Democracy: The Demon and the Hegemon; Negative Revolution: Modern Political Subject and Its Fate after the Cold War; Politics of the One: Concepts of the One and the Many in Contemporary Thought; and Unity and Solitude: The Course of Modern Political Philosophy. His publications also include articles in numerous scholarly journals, including Theory & Event, Telos, History of Political Thought, New German Critique, and Continental Philosophy Review.
