Biography:

B.A., Sarah Lawrence College; M.A., Johns Hopkins University. Novelist, essayist, journalist. Visiting artist, American Academy in Rome (1994). Awards and fellowships: National Endowment for the Arts (2012), Yaddo (2009), Ucross (2009, 2012), Sewanee Writers' Conference Dakin Fellow (2008), California Book Award (First Fiction, 2008), Northwestern University Academy for Alternative Journalism Fellow (2003). Board of directors, Canteen. Guest editor (Iranian-American issue), Guernica. Author of two novels: Sons and Other Flammable Objects (Grove, 2007) and The Last Illusion (Bloomsbury, 2014). Contributor to publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Harper's, Slate, Salon, Daily Beast, Elle, Spin, and many more. Previously at Columbia University, Fordham University, Johns Hopkins University, Santa Fe University of Art and Design, Fairfield University, Bucknell University, Hofstra University, and University of Leipzig.
