Biography:

BFA, School of Visual Arts. John von Bergen is a sculptor who has served on the faculty at Bard College Berlin (BCB) since 2015 and as director of the school’s studio arts program since 2017. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, MacDowell Colony residency, Fountainhead residency (Miami), and Germany’s Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie. Since moving to Berlin in 2003, his work has been exhibited in various international museums, galleries, and institutions, including Halle 14 (Leipzig), Wilhelm-Hack Museum (Ludwigshafen), Galeria Pilar (São Paulo), Pera Museum (Istanbul), and Smack Mellon (New York). His most recent solo exhibition, RELICS, opened in June 2018 at Zentralwerk, Dresden. In 2014, von Bergen’s exhibition Prey Voidant opened at Alexander Levy (Berlin) at the same time as the release of his first monograph, CORE (Kerber Verlag / D.A.P.). Selected reviews/interviews with Kimberly Bradley, BBC, on how to ship a masterpiece; an artist talk with writer Jonathan Lethem in Berlin; and pieces in BOMB magazine, Temporary Art Review, and Tagesspiegel, among others. At BCB, von Bergen’s courses have included Hands-On: Exploring Methods Toward a Personal Sculpting Practice; Advanced Sculpture: The Challenge of Form; Concept Building, Problem Solving, and Logistics for Sculptors in Tomorrow's Art World; and Contemporary Materials and Techniques.
