Biography:

B.A., Pomona College; Ph.D., Princeton University. Member of the New York Times editorial board (1997– ). Guest curator, The Pierpont Morgan Library (1987–88). Has taught at Bennington College, Harvard University, Fordham University, St. Olaf College, Princeton University. Awards and fellowships include National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1988–89); Distinguished Teaching Award, Harvard University (1989–92); Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award (1991); Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Fund Writer’s Award (1992–95). Author of The Last Fine Time (University of Chicago Press) and The Rural Life (Little, Brown & Company). At Bard since 2004.
