Biography:

B.A., University of California, Berkeley; M.F.A., Columbia University. Senior editor, Paris Review (1981–88). Author of the novels My Hollywood (2010; Best Book of the Year by the Atlantic Monthly and New Yorker); Off Keck Road (2001; finalist for PEN/Faulkner Prize); A Regular Guy (1997); The Lost Father (1992); and Anywhere But Here (1986). Stories and articles published in Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, Granta, Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prize Anthology, The Paris Review Anthology, and London Review of Books. Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim Foundation; recipient, Whiting Foundation Award, Hodder Fellowship, Lila Wallace Award, and most recently, an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Mary McCarthy Prize, at Bard.
