Biography:
B.A., Kalamazoo College; M.A., School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; M.Phil., Ph.D. candidate, Columbia University. Author of
Open City (Random House, 2011; winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award and the New York City Book Award, short-listed for National Book Critics Circle Award;
Every Day Is for the Thief (Cassava Press, 2007); articles in
New Yorker, Transition, Tin House, Farafina, and other magazines and journals. Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in the Humanities (2001–02); Chinua Achebe Fellow, Bard College (2011). Has taught at Hofstra, Columbia, and New York universities. At Bard since 2011.
