An Obie Award–winning artist who works in performance and visual art, he trained in dance with Charles Weidman and at the American Ballet Theatre School and Harkness House for Ballet Arts. He studied painting and drawing at Parsons the New School for Design (with Larry Rivers and Barbara Pearlman) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He also studied mime at Theatre de l’Ange Fou, Paris; trapeze with the Pickle Family Circus in San Francisco; and voice at the Accademia Musicale Ottorino Respighi in Assisi, Italy. His performances have been based on subjects ranging from autobiography to cultural and political phenomena, such as the Berlin Wall, the AIDS epidemic, and expressionistic film. He has also created character studies based on historic figures, including Egon Schiele, Caravaggio, Antonin Artaud, Joni Mitchell, and Jean Cocteau. He has performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally at venues including Joe’s Pub at New York’s Public Theater, Yale Repertory Theatre, Alice Tully Hall, Tate Modern in London, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Walker Arts Center, and Bard’s Spiegeltent, among many others. Exhibitions of his visual art include solo shows at Julie Heller Gallery, Provincetown; La Galleria La MaMa and The Kitchen, New York; and American Academy in Rome; and group shows throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to his two Obie Awards, he is the recipient of two Bessie Awards, two NEA American Masterpiece Awards, an American Choreography Award, the Rome Prize in Visual Art, and the 2010 Ethyl Eichelberger Award.
