Q:Are students who do not demonstrate financial need eligible for Bard Scholarships or the EEC Scholarship? If one's school uses percentiles instead of rankings, is a letter from a school official explaining that the student would be in the top ten if ranking was used sufficient to qualify the student for the EEC scholarship? Also, are there any additional merit-based scholarships besides the one listed on the website? Finally, are students notified of having received a merit scholarship at the same time their financial-aid package is sent? Thank you.
A:All students no matter how their school ranks are reviewed for the EEC scholarship. Hundreds of applicants qualify and in the final review, need is a considered variable. In the allocation of the $21 million financial aid budget need is always a consideration. There are no additional merit scholarships other than those listed.

Q:My parents have not yet received all their tax information, and don't feel like they will be able to do their taxes before the Febuary 15th deadline. It's our impression that we need our 2007 taxes to apply for Financial Aid. What sort of consequences will there be for not completing the Financial Aid forms on time?
A:Your parents will have to estimate. Most people can take the previous year's information and make adjustments based on changes for 2007 and come up with a ball park figure. If we get this information too late (there is some leeway), then all of our financial aid dollars may be already given out.

Q:Hello! I am planning on graduating high school a semester early for an outside of school educational experience. However, I was wondering which classes I should take while I still have the opportunities and for how many years should I take them. Thanks!
A:The Bard admission committee expects applicants to pursue a strong course of study offered by their high school, including honors or advanced level courses if available. We recommend that such a program should include a full 4 year sequence in English, social studies, and mathematics; study of at least one foreign language for three or preferably four years; and three to four years of study in the laboratory sciences. The Admission Committee is interested in the entire high school record, with junior and senior year courses and results being especially important.

Q:I applied early action. When will my acceptence/denial letter come through? Also, my PC is only working sporadically- will the confirmation come in snail mail or email form?
A:You should hear by December 21, by snail mail.

Q:My daughter is in the process of completing her application to Bard. She is specifically interested in Creative Writing. As as an option to Supplemental Question #2, a graded paper may be submitted. May this be a graded sample of her writing?
A:We would like to have a graded academic or analytical paper. She may send samples of her creative writing as a supplement to her application.

Q:I applied Early Action, but was unable to get up to Bard before Nov. 1. If I go up soon, will by interview still be 'counted'?
A:Early action interviews are no longer available. However, interviews are not required and, in fact, most of our appplicants do not interview.

Q:I would like to know how many teacher recommendations Bard wants. Also, are there any requirements that the Bard college has for teacher recommendations? Thank you
A:We require two teacher recommendations and a counselor report. We would like one of the recommendations to be from a teacher who has taught you a humanities subject and the other from one who has taught you math or science.

Q:The application date for Early Admission is November 1. Is this the date it must be mailed or is it the date that it must be received by Bard College? Thank you.
A:It is the date by which it must be postmarked. Be sure to mark on your application that you want to be considered for early action.

Q:I am a junior and have attended a private school for high school. My school is accredited, but does not offer any honors or AP classes. I am taking the two advanced classes(Physics, and Pre-Cal) that my school offers, but I was wondering if the lack of honors courses at my school would prevent me from being accepted at Bard. Thank you.
A:Absolutely not. We look at each applicant in the context of what is offered at their school.

Q:The supplement for Bard on the Common Application website has a choice of essays. One of them is a graded assignment from junior or senior year. Would Bard prefer that I send in the actual paper with the teacher's comments and grade on it or should I just upload the document to the Common App website?
A:Do not send the original paper; photocopy it and send the copy via regular mail to the Admission Office. If you upload the paper itself to the Common App website, we won't get your teacher's written comments on your work. Since the Common App can't be sent electronically until you put something in the supplemental essay field, simply write that you are sending a graded paper under separate cover.
