Internships

The Internship Program

Students work 20-25 hours per week at the leading private, public, and nonprofit entities in New York City. This hands-on experience enables students to put classroom theory into real-world practice while exploring career opportunities in international affairs. All students are required to complete a 12-15 week internship during the semester, eight weeks in the summer.

BGIA staff help students to match their interests and skill levels with appropriate internship organizations. As interns, students are treated as young hires, given substantive work, and supervised by a staff mentor, who guides and teaches the intern about vital questions in their area of expertise. BGIA faculty structure the Core Seminar on Globalization and International Affairs to provide an academic framework for each student to contextualize his or her professional experience.

For Employers Seeking Highly Qualified Interns

BGIA is a small and selective program for undergraduates and recent graduates. Demonstrated maturity and professionalism are among our primary criteria for acceptance. BGIA currently sends interns to over 140 organizations, where our students have developed a record of significant achievement. BGIA students work between 20 and 25 hours per week for 12 - 15 weeks, and receive academic credit for the work that they do. Since they earn academic credit, they are not paid. A rigorous seminar-tutorial structure supports them in their internships. We work hard to match our students with the right working situation, so that mentors and students have a constructive experience. Click here for Guidelines for Mentors*.

If your organization is interested in hosting an intern, please contact us directly, via e-mail at bgia@bard.edu, or via phone at 646-839-9262.
