Student Testimonials
William Gingher, UNC-Chapel Hill, Center for Strategic and International Studies, BGIA summer 2006
"Attending the BGIA program was an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to intern at Human Rights Watch, where I worked on Chinese issues, and to take a class on Terrorism with Tom Parker, a former MI5 agent with direct counter-terrorism experience. Jonathan Cristol's seminar was excellent, and the staff and faculty are all great people. I know that BGIA helped me a great deal with my career, and it definitely helped me find a job in DC. Living in New York was an incredible experience and I met new people from all over the world. The program allowed me to have a great time, while simultaneously challenging myself and preparing for a career."

Anup Kahple, Nepal, Tuscalum College & Columbia Journalism School, BGIA summer 2006
"Until I attended BGIA, I had a very crude knowledge of international affairs. At BGIA, not only did I learn a great deal about foreign policy issues, I was also able to focus on terrorism and counter terrorism, which helped me understand how terrorism has evolved over several centuries. As an intern at Newsweek, I was able to familiarize myself with magazine editing and international and conflict reporting, a career that I personally would like to pursue after graduating from Columbia. The guest speakers we had helped me better understand how the world of journalism and foreign policy works. The regular social events brought students from as far as Slovakia and Turkey together which increased my understanding of other cultures."

Catalina Mesesan, Romania, University of Bucharest, BGIA fall 2007
"My time at BGIA provided me with a unique opportunity: to work with humanitarian workers and, at the same time, to observe the negotiation processes taking place at the United Nations. The International Center for Tolerance provides an excellent opportunity for activists from developing countries to network and to train in United States. Alternately, my internship at the Romanian Mission at the United Nations provided me with insight into the process by which their agendas are channeled to international resolution procedures."

Eduardo Mills, Venezuela, Bard College, BGIA fall 2007
"Having participated in the BGIA program as an intern at Oxford Analytica provided me with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while further expanding my academic horizons. Being constantly surrounded by both a highly motivated group of students, and specialists in the field of political and economic risk analysis allowed me to not just attain a deeper understanding of International Affairs, but also to develop a more focused career path."

Marion Smith, Wofford College, BGIA fall 2007
"My time as a legal intern at International Crisis Group allowed me excellent hands-on experience with a respected international human rights NGO. The knowledge gained and contacts made have already proven invaluable to me as I continue my studies and make career plans. BGIA is a uniquely well-structured program as many of the timely topics I saw coming through ICG were complimented by the seminars and academic readings in my courses at BGIA."

Amanda Gurung, Nepal, Bard College, BGIA fall 2007
"My time at BGIA as both a student and a young professional was invaluable. While academics are important, related professional experience in the actual field is vital for young professionals. BGIA has succeeded in combing these two aspects and creating a program that allows students to obtain experience interning at a non-profit or international organization, while also taking classes, thus juxtaposing the practical and the theoretical."
