Year 1 and Year 2 Timelines

Year 1

September-December

  • Take October 15 PSAT (10th grade students can elect to take PSAT)
  • Attend meetings with college representatives
  • Speak with Whitney Bates, our student activities coordinator, to get involved with the BHSEC community, volunteer, find internships, etc. Find an activity that you can commit to and feel passionate about.

December 

  • Prepare for January regents so you are free to attend the Simon's Rock trip in June.
  • Speak with Monique Golberg at Kaplan to find an SAT course to prepare for the March or May SAT, or ACT.  (Monique's information is listed under the "Standardized Testing" portion of the website.)

January/February

  • Take regents in January so that you can attend the Simon's Rock trip during June.
  • Speak with Monique Golberg at Kaplan to find an SAT courseto prepare for the March or May SAT, or ACT.   (Monique's information is listed under the "Standardized Testing portion of the website.)
  • BHSEC college transfer advisors assigned
  • Attend  weekly CTO meetings, scheduled for all Year 1 students in the spring term.

March

  • Take the SAT 1 or ACT (with writing).  You can also take the SAT in May, if you prefer.

May

  • Take the SAT I or ACT (with writing) if you did not already in March

June

  • Take up to 3 SAT II Subject Tests, or the SAT I or ACT (with writing) if you have not already.  We recommend you take two subject tests only.  These are hour long tests that require preparation.  Only a few schools require 3 subject tests; the vast majority require 2.
  • Attend the Year 1 retreat to Simon’s Rock

Year 2

Throughout the fall, Year 2 students continue to:

1) Attend the mandatory college advisory meetings
2) Attend meetings with college representatives
3) Read the College Notes
4) Check email regularly
5) Check the College Transfer Bulletin Boards outside the CTO

September

  • Resolve outstanding grade changes
  • Set up a meeting with your College Transfer Advisor, particularly if you are considering applying Early Decision or Early Action
  • Complete the college advising questionnaire at SSS.
  • Call colleges to arrange visits/overnight stays

October

  • Request letters of recommendation from faculty
  • Continue meeting with your college transfer advisor, as needed.
  • Work on college essays. Take essay drafts to the Writing Center for assistance.
  • Participate in college open houses, multicultural programs, etc.
  • Apply for scholarships (and continue to do so through the end of the year)
  • Take, or retake, SAT I, SAT IIs, or the ACT (with writing)
  • Call colleges to schedule interviews

November

  • Submit Early Decision/Early Action applications
  • Submit applications to schools with Rolling Admissions
  • File SUNY applications
  • Take SAT I, SAT IIs, or the ACT (with writing)

December

  • Early Decision/ Early Action decisions sent to students
  • Polish essays and supplemental applications
  • Submit regular decision applications

January

  • File FAFSA and CSS Profile (visit the financial aid section of the website for more details on these forms)
  • Continue to submit applications

February

  • First semester grades mailed to colleges
  • File CUNY applications 
  • Submit transfer applications

March

  • Continue to submit transfer applications
  • Continue to apply for scholarships

April

  • Admissions decisions sent to students
  • Compare financial aid packages
  • Visit schools you are considering attending
  • Continue to apply for scholarships

May

  • Notify the college of your decision to attend; pay deposit
  • Notify counselors and teachers of acceptances
  • Enter acceptances, rejections and waitlists at students@bhsec.net
