College Transfer

Timelines

Year 1

September–December
  • Take October 15 PSAT (10th grade students can elect to take PSAT)
  • Attend meetings with college representatives
  • Speak with a student activities coordinator to discuss how to get involved in the BHSEC community. Students should consider volunteering, finding internships, and committing to those activities about which they feel passionate.
December
  • Students prepare for January Regents exam(s).
  • Speak with BHSEC contact at Kaplan to find an SAT course to prepare for the March or May SAT, or ACT. (Contact information for Kaplan is listed under Standardized Testing.)
January
  • Take required Regents exam(s) in January.
February
  • Students are assigned BHSEC college transfer advisors.
  • Attend weekly CTO meetings begin for all Year 1 students.
March
  • Take the SAT 1 or ACT (with writing). Students may also take the SAT in May.
May
  • Those students who did not take the SAT I or ACT (with writing) in March should do so now.
June
  • Students take up to three SAT II Subject Tests, or the SAT I or ACT (with writing) if they have not already done so. (BHSEC recommends that students take two subject tests only.)
  • Attend the Year 1 retreat to Simon’s Rock.

Year 2

September
  • Resolve any outstanding grade changes.
  • Students should set up a meeting with their College Transfer Advisor, particularly those students who are considering applying Early Decision or Early Action.
  • Complete the college advising questionnaire at Student Services Site (SSS).
  • Arrange visits and possible overnight stays to prospective schools.
October
  • Request letters of recommendation from faculty.
  • Draft college essays. Help is available in the Writing Center.
  • Attend college open houses and information sessions.
  • Begin applying for scholarships.
  • Take, or retake, SAT I, SAT IIs, or the ACT (with writing).
  • Call colleges to schedule interviews.
November
  • Submit Early Decision/Early Action applications.
  • Submit applications to schools with Rolling Admissions.
  • File SUNY applications.
  • Take, or retake, SAT I, SAT IIs, or the ACT (with writing).
December
  • Early Decision/ Early Action decisions are sent to applicants.
  • Finalize essays and submit supplemental applications.
  • Begin submitting regular decision applications.
January
  • File FAFSA and CSS Profile.
February
  • First semester grades are mailed to colleges.
  • File CUNY applications.
  • Begin to submit transfer applications.
April
  • Notification for those students who applied for regular admission.
  • Compare financial aid packages.
  • Visit schools.
May
  • Notify all colleges of admissions decisions.
  • Send deposit to the school you plan to attend. 
  • Notify counselors and teachers of acceptances.
  • Enter admissions decisions at students@bhsec.net.
