Bard High School Early College Newark (BHSEC Newark) opened in September 2011 as a collaboration between Bard College and the Newark Public Schools. BHSEC Newark seeks to demonstrate that an academically rigorous liberal arts program can intellectually engage a diverse group of high school students and better prepare them for success than a traditional high school can. We enable students from underserved middle schools to reach their full intellectual potential and complete a college education.
At BHSEC Newark we offer our students two years of high school education in the 9th and 10th grades. During the final two years at BHSEC, our students are enrolled in our early college program rather than in 11th or 12th grade. Upon successful completion of the BHSEC Newark program, students graduate with a State of New Jersey high school diploma, having completed two years of college-level coursework
The Office of Admission at Bard High School Early College is committed to recruiting highly motivated young adults from all neighborhoods in Newark. It is our goal to provide our students with a challenging liberal arts curriculum that fosters and cultivates their intellectual curiosity and creativity. To ensure the individual success of students in our Early College program, we carefully consider the results of a math and writing assessment before interviewing eligible candidates for admission. We seek to admit those applicants who demonstrate maturity, intellectual curiosity, and a love of learning.
BHSEC Newark invites applications for full-time faculty positions, beginning in our inaugural year, September 2011. For these founding faculty roles, we are seeking dynamic, innovative teachers excited about developing new curricula and bringing our liberal arts early college model to the students of Newark.
