Shafer House (Master of Arts in Teaching)

 --

Shafer House was the longtime residence of the late Frederick Q. Shafer, professor of religion at the College, and Margaret Creal Shafer. The midcentury modern facility has offices for faculty and staff and a seminar room that seats up to 15 people.

Shafer House is currently the home of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program. The core of this yearlong program, founded in 2003, is an integrated curriculum leading to a master of arts in teaching degree and a teaching certificate for grades 7–12 in English, mathematics, biology, or history. In combination with student-teaching experiences and the active participation of mentor teachers and MAT faculty advisers, the program's innovative courses provide the basis for critical reflection on educational practice.
