Al-Quds Bard Partnership

www.alqudsbard.org

Bard College has joined forces with Al-Quds University, an institution located in and around Jerusalem, to establish three new programs aimed at improving the Palestinian education system: The Honors College for Liberal Arts and Sciences; the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program; and The Model School, covering grades 5 through 12. The Honors College and MAT programs will offer dual degrees from Bard and Al-Quds—the first such initiative between a Palestinian university and an American institution of higher education.

Beginning in 2009, the Al-Quds Bard Honors College will offer a four-year interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the best traditions of the Palestinian and U.S. education systems, while promoting active learning, independent thinking, critical inquiry, and the free exchange of ideas. It will include key elements of the Bard education, such as the First-Year Seminar, Moderation, and the Senior Project. Graduates will receive a B.A. Hons. from Al-Quds and a B.A. from Bard College. The MAT program, which educates teachers through a two-year program of graduate study in an academic field and in education, will also grant dual master’s degrees from Al-Quds and Bard. The Model School, set to open in 2010, will share its campus with the MAT program and serve as a “laboratory” for educational innovation. The goal is to raise expectations for local students and prepare graduates to complete a college degree.

Bard College at Simon’s Rock has been a leader in the early college movement for more than 40 years and continues to distinguish itself as the only residential college in the country specifically designed to provide bright, highly motivated students with the opportunity to begin college immediately after the 10th or 11th grade. At Simon’s Rock, students experience a transformative education in the liberal arts and sciences in the company of smart, independent, creative peers who share their excitement about learning and their desire to be part of a vibrant intellectual community. Students who successfully complete the requirements receive the associate in arts (A.A.) degree after two years of study and the bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree after four. The campus is located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Bard High School Early College Program

www.bard.edu/bhsec

Premised on the belief that high school–age students will thrive with more intellectually challenging academic work, the Bard High School Early College Program (BHSEC) offers motivated young people in New York City the opportunity to embark on serious college work at age 16. In four years BHSEC students can progress from ninth grade through the first two years of college, graduating with both a New York State Regents diploma and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College. Graduates are eligible to transfer BHSEC credits to four-year programs at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

The first Bard High School Early College was founded in 2001 by Bard College and the New York City Board of Education. Located in Manhattan, it enrolls approximately 550 students from diverse backgrounds. A second school opened in Queens in 2008. A relationship with the New York Academy of Science enables BHSEC students and faculty to connect with active researchers throughout New York City.

Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities

http://clemente.bard.edu

The Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities provides college-level instruction, for college credit, to economically disadvantaged individuals aged 17 and older. Begun as a pilot project on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Clemente Course is currently in its 15th year of operation; in 2008–09, approximately 300 students matriculated at 14 sites around the country. Overall, the program has enrolled 3,123 students, of whom 2,045 completed the course; 1,801 earned college credit; and 1,530 transferred to four-year colleges and universities or planned to do so.

The program is based on the belief that by studying the humanities, participants acquire the cultural capital, conceptual skills, and appreciation for reasoned discourse necessary to improve their societal situation. Clemente students receive 110 hours of instruction in five humanistic disciplines and explore the great works of literature, art history, moral philosophy, and American history. Instruction in critical thinking and writing is also offered. The program removes many of the financial barriers to higher education that low-income individuals face: books, carfare, and child care are provided, and tuition is free. Bard grants a certificate of achievement to any student completing the Clemente Course and 6 college credits to those completing it at a high level of academic performance. Bard also provides informational sessions on applying to colleges and offers a two-semester sequel program in New York City, Chicago, and Boston, for graduates who desire to continue their education but are unable to transfer immediately into a regular college degree program.
