Campus Life
Bard’s campus covers more than 500 acres of fields and forest bordering the Hudson River, offering an idyllic year-round setting for work, relaxation, and reflection. The Catskill Mountains across the river form a beautiful backdrop. Trails meander through woods, along the Sawkill, and down to the river. At Bard, students can pursue their academic interests inside and outside the classroom and enjoy a rich social life interwoven with their cultural and intellectual pursuits. This chapter describes the facilities for study, student activities, residences, and student services.
According to College policy, all new construction is built according to “green” principles; the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Center for Science and Computation, and Robbins House expansion are examples of campus facilities that are geothermally heated and cooled. The entire campus has been dedicated as the Bard Landscape and Arboretum, with trail maps of historic and specimen trees. Many College facilities are clustered at the center of the campus: Kline Commons, with its main student dining hall and meeting places for students and faculty; classrooms; libraries; the computer centers; science labs; art studios; and the gymnasium. Residence halls are located in the central campus area or are within easy walking or bicycling distance. The campus is also a center from which to explore the rich natural and cultural life of the Hudson Valley, from New York City to the Adirondack Mountains. |
