Longy School of Music of Bard College

The Longy School of Music is a degree-granting institution and Conservatory, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a unique Master of Arts in Teaching campus in Los Angeles, California, in partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (see page 289). Founded in 1915 by oboist Georges Longy, the school is committed to preparing its students to meet a changing musical landscape head-on, giving them the skills to perform, the ambition to teach, and the ability to reach audiences beyond those traditionally associated with classical music. Every student is required to live by Longy’s bold mission—to prepare musicians to make a difference in the world—by serving the community around them. Longy is the only conservatory in the United States that weaves artistry and service together as an integral, required part of the curriculum. The result is newfound opportunity and access to music in heretofore excluded communities and increased support—in short, a new future—for classical music.

Longy serves more than 300 students from 35 states and 16 countries between its Cambridge campus and its MAT campus in Los Angeles. Longy confers the master of music degree, master of arts in teaching degree, undergraduate diploma, graduate performance diploma, artist diploma, and the Dalcroze certificate and license.
