Scholarships

Scholarships are given tocontinuing Bard students. The John Bard Scholarships are honorary and carry nostipend. All other undergraduate scholarships are given only to students whoare eligible for financial aid.

George I. Alden Scholarship An endowed scholarship providing annual support todeserving students

Alumni/ae Scholarship A scholarship given annually by the Bard–St.Stephen’s Alumni/ae Association to one or more students for excellence inscholarship and citizenship and awarded by the president on the recommendationof the faculty

Amicus Foundation Scholarship An endowed scholarship awarded annually to aqualified and deserving student in the field of economics

Hannah Arendt Scholarship A scholarship, in memory of Hannah Arendt, awardedannually for study at Bard to a worthy and qualified first-, second-, orthird-year student

Artine Artinian Scholarship for Needy Students A scholarship established by Artine Artinian,professor emeritus of French, and given annually to talented and deservingstudents

Gustave Aufricht Memorial Scholarship A scholarship established by Gabor and RobertAufricht, members of the Class of 1941, in the name and memory of their father,Dr. Gustave Aufricht, and
awarded annually to a gifted student in the Division of Science, Mathematics,and Computing

Milton and Sally Avery Scholarship A scholarship awarded annually to qualified anddeserving
students in the undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts

Banco Santander Scholarship Awarded to a student of exceptional ability in theBard College Conservatory of Music, with a preference for a student from Spainor Latin America

John Bard Scholarships Honorary scholarships awarded annually by the facultyof each division of the College to not more than two students in each divisionfor outstanding academic achievement in the field of major interest

Bettina Baruch Foundation Scholarship Awarded to an outstanding student in the BardCollege Conservatory of Music

BBL Construction Services Scholarship A scholarship established through the generosity ofthe firm of BBL Construction Services and given annually to a deserving studentof superior academic achievement

Bertha Bennett Berman Scholarship A scholarship in memory of Bertha Bennett Berman,established by her daughter and son-in-law, to be awarded to a deserving femalestudent who wishes to pursue a career in medicine or the natural sciences

Andrew Jay Bernstein ’68 MemorialScholarship A scholarship in memoryof Andrew Jay Bernstein ’68, awarded annually to psychology majors whodemonstrate a deep commitment to the field of psychology

Helen Walter Bernstein ’48 Scholarships Scholarships established by Helen ’48 and RobertBernstein to enable two or more students from countries outside the UnitedStates to study at Bard

Sybil Brenner Bernstein Endowed Scholarship A scholarship given annually to a deserving BardGraduate Center M.A. student who demonstrates exceptional talent for and loveof the decorative arts

Bindeman Family PresidentialDiscretionary Scholarship Ascholarship awarded, at the discretion of the president of the College, to aqualified and deserving student in special circumstances

Heinrich Bluecher Scholarship A scholarship in memory of Heinrich Bluecher, awardedannually for study at Bard to a worthy and qualified first-, second-, orthird-year student

Kenneth Bush Memorial Scholarship inMathematics A scholarship givenannually in memory of

Harry J. Carman Scholarship A scholarship established in memory of Dr. Harry J.Carman and awarded to one or more students for general academic excellence;given with preference to students whose names have frequently appeared on theHonors List

Edward Lee Cave Fellowships Awarded to outstanding M.A. and Ph.D. students atthe Bard Graduate Center

Class of ’65 Scholarship A scholarship established by the Class of 1965 inhonor of its 35th reunion

Class of 1968 Scholarship A scholarship established by the Class of 1968 uponthe occasion of its 25th reunion and awarded to a student who, in the judgmentof the faculty and the dean of the College, best exemplifies the spirit ofsocial activism and community service that distinguished the Class of 1968during its years at Bard

Cowles Fellowship Awarded to an outstanding M.A. student at the Bard Graduate Center

Cowles Landscape Studies Fellowship Awarded to an outstanding M.A. student in gardenhistory and landscape studies at the Bard Graduate Center

Muriel DeGré Scholarship A scholarship given annually by the family andfriends of the late Muriel DeGré, wife of Gerard DeGré, professor of sociologyat Bard College from 1946 to 1968, and awarded to a deserving Upper Collegewoman who exemplifies both scholarship and service to the community

Elaine de Kooning Memorial Scholarship A graduate scholarship givenannually in memory of Elaine de Kooning to deserving female students who showpromise in painting, to enable them to study at the Milton Avery GraduateSchool of the Arts; created by her family, friends, and former students toperpetuate the memory of a great teacher and an inspiring role model

Kathryn J. Dinardo Fund Fellowship A scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding M.A.student at the Bard Graduate Center

Ralph Ellison Scholarship A scholarship given annually, without regard toracial, ethnic, or other personal background or characteristics, to one or moredeserving students who, in the judgment of the faculty and administration, havecontributed significantly to the Bard College community’s understanding ofdifference and its efforts to end discrimination

Nesuhi Ertegun Scholarships in Music Scholarships established in memory of Nesuhi Ertegun,who made a great contribution to American music and to jazz in particular, andawarded annually to qualified and deserving students with a serious interest inmusic, especially jazz and black American music

SLR Ertegun Foundation Scholarship A scholarship given to a student from southernAfrica who is participating in the Program in International Education (PIE)

Elsie and Otto Faerber Scholarship A scholarship awarded in the name of Otto Faerber’27, upon the nomination of the dean of students, to an individual withdetermination, a passion for exploration, and a willingness to performcommunity public service

Barbara and Joel H. Fields ’53 Pre-MedScholarship Awarded to a student,during the junior and senior years, who has shown outstanding academicachievement as well as the desire and ability to gain acceptance into medicalschool

Finisdore Family Scholarship A scholarship established to assist a student whoqualifies under normal College procedures for financial aid and who has hearingloss as measured by professional audiological testing

Richard B. Fisher Fellowship A fellowship given annually in memory of trusteeRichard B. Fisher to a student of writing in the Milton Avery Graduate Schoolof the Arts

Seth Goldfine Memorial Scholarship A scholarship given annually in memory of SethGoldfine, who founded the Rugby Club at Bard, recognizing a student whodisplays outstanding leadership in academic work and athletics for the benefitof the entire Bard community

Eric Warren Goldman Scholarship A scholarship awarded annually to qualified anddeserving students in the undergraduate program at Bard, preferably ineconomics or another field of social studies

Philip H. Gordon Family MoralLeadership Scholarship Ascholarship awarded annually to students who have demonstrated moral leadershipby actively opposing prejudice, discrimination, and violence

Paul J. Kellner Scholarships Five scholarships awarded to students with limitedresources, to enable them to attend Bard under the Excellence and Equal Cost(EEC) scholarship program

Kellner Hungarian Scholarships Three scholarships given to students from Hungary whoare participating in the Program in International Education (PIE)

Stanley Landsman Fellowship The Stanley Landsman Fund, established by the familyand friends of Stanley Landsman, provides for a limited number of full andpartial fellowships for students who are eligible for financial aid and arecandidates for the master of fine arts degree from the Milton Avery GraduateSchool of the Arts.

Stanley Landsman Scholarship The Stanley Landsman Fund, established by the familyand friends of Stanley Landsman, provides for two undergraduate scholarships tobe awarded annually, on recommendation of the faculty, to a junior and a seniormajoring in the visual arts.

Eugene M. Lang Scholarship Fund A fund providing scholarship support based on need tostudents of promise, with preference given to minority students

Clair Leonard Scholarship A scholarship established by the friends of ClairLeonard, professor of music at Bard College from 1947 to 1963, in his name andmemory, for excellence in the field of music

The Levy Economics InstituteScholarships Two full-tuitionscholarships awarded each year to academically outstanding high school seniorscommitted to majoring in economics and renewable on condition of maintaining aB+ or higher grade point average

Leon Levy Endowment Fund Scholarships Scholarships based on superior academic and artisticachievement and awarded to second- or third-year students who demonstrateexceptional merit in written and oral expression, independent thinking andintellectual leadership, and breadth of interest in intellectual and artisticpursuits

Liberace Foundation Scholarship A scholarship awarded by the Liberace Foundation forthe Performing and Creative Arts to talented students planning careers in thearts

Arthur F. Martin Jr. Scholarship A scholarship established in memory of Arthur F.Martin Jr. ’56 and awarded annually by his former classmates, friends, andteachers to a qualified and deserving student in the Division of Science,Mathematics, and Computing, with preference given to a student intending toenter medical school

Math for America Fellowship A scholarship awarded annually by Math for America toqualified students in the Master of Arts in Teaching Program who demonstrate acommitment to working in the New York City public school system for four years

James J. McCann Scholarship A scholarship awarded annually, through thegenerosity of the James J. McCann Charitable Trust, to a qualified student orstudents from Dutchess County

Emerald Rose McKenzie ’52 Scholarship A scholarship awarded in memory of Emerald RoseMcKenzie ’52 to a female student who is committed to anthropology or sociologyand gender studies and who demonstrates a strong commitment to humanitarianideals

Katherine Lynne Mester MemorialScholarship in Humanities Awardedto students who carry on her spirit of generosity, her kindness, and hergenuine love of learning. This scholarship has been established in her memoryby her loving husband, Professor Joseph Luzzi, and her parents, Lynne and FredMester.

MFA–Alumni/ae Scholarship Scholarships, created from contributions by MiltonAvery Graduate School of the Arts alumni/ae, awarded annually to one ormore students in the MFA program who have demonstrated financial need

Milners Fund Fellowship in PopulationStudies A fellowship given to oneor more graduate students in the Bard Center for Environmental Policy whodemonstrate outstanding ability and serious commitment to the study of aspectsof human population growth

Morningstar Scholarships for Dance andTheater Students Scholarships givento talented and deserving students, preferably male, who plan to concentrate indance and/or theater and have already expressed an interest in moderating inone of these areas

Open Society Institute Scholarships Scholarships funded by the Open Society Instituteas part of its Undergraduate Exchange Program, which enables students fromcountries of the former Soviet Union, Central and Eastern Europe, and Mongoliato attend a college or university in the United States for one year

Osher Reentry Scholarship Scholarships awarded to undergraduates, ideallybetween the ages of 25 and 50, who have experienced a cumulative gap in theireducation of five or more years

Jim and Mary Ottaway Scholarships Awarded to two students of exceptional ability inthe Bard College Conservatory of Music

Photography Advisory Board Scholarship A two-year scholarship given annually to one ormore moderated Photography Program majors to cover the material costsassociated with Upper College photographic work

Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award A scholarship awarded for the senior year to anoutstanding student majoring in music

Mark Purlia Memorial Scholarship A scholarship given by the parents of Mark Purlia’71, in his name and memory, and awarded annually to a student who, in thejudgment of the Division of Languages and Literature, best fulfills conditionsof ability, character, and need

Reader’s Digest Foundation Scholarship An endowed scholarship awarded to one or more UpperCollege students who have distinguished themselves in academic work

Stanley and Elaine Reichel ScienceScholarship A scholarship awardedto an outstanding and deserving student to complete an education in thesciences at Bard; provided as an offshoot of the Stanley and Elaine ReichelFund for the Future of Science at Bard, which was created in 1989 by StanleyReichel ’65 and Elaine Reichel to recognize the excellence of Bard’s Divisionof Science, Mathematics, and Computing

Daniel I. Sargent Memorial Fellowship Awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. candidate at theBard Graduate Center. Established by Elaine Sargent in memory of her husband.

Seraphic Doctor Scholarship A scholarship established by Johanna Shafer ’67 andMichael Shafer ’66 and awarded annually to a student who shows commitment tofaith in God and to simplicity of lifestyle as exemplified by Saint Francis

Peter Jay Sharp Endowed Scholarship Awarded annually to outstanding Ph.D. candidates atthe Bard Graduate Center

Murray G. and Beatrice H. ShermanScholarship A scholarship to adeserving student who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need

Shreiber Family Scholarships Scholarships offered annually to deserving Russianstudents at Smolny College based on academic achievement and demonstratedfinancial need. The scholarships are named for Nicholas Shreiber(1910–1980), originally from St. Petersburg, and are given by his wifeand children to support liberal arts education in that city.

Cooky Heiferman Signet Scholarship A scholarship given by the parents of EstherHeiferman Signet ’56, in her name and memory, and awarded annually to aqualified and deserving student in the field of social studies

Marilyn M. Simpson Endowed Scholarship Awarded annually to outstanding Ph.D. candidates atthe Bard Graduate Center

Stephen P. Snyder Scholarship A scholarship awarded to a student in the Division ofSocial Studies who has not only shown excellence in academics but also made asignificant contribution to the life of the College and its community

Arnelle Solomon Scholarship A scholarship given by Larry Solomon ’78 and BernardRudnick to a sophomore or junior student in good academic standing who, in thejudgment of the dean of students and two representatives from studentgovernment, has contributed most to the quality of student life at Bard

C. V. Starr Scholarship An endowed scholarship established to provide supportfor Bard students from abroad who demonstrate both need and academicexcellence

Mary and Richard Sugatt Scholarship A scholarship for students who have distinguishedthemselves in both the academic life of the College and the leadership of thestudent body

Symons Foundation Scholarship forAnimal Welfare A scholarship givento a student who has demonstrated a commitment to animal welfare, made possiblein part by the Independent College Fund of New York

Brewster Terry III MemorialScholarship A scholarshipestablished and endowed in 1987 by the classmates, friends, and family of I.Brewster Terry III ’38, in his name and memory, and awarded to students in theUpper College whose commitment to liberal learning manifests itself indistinguished work in both the classroom and the College community

Thomas Thompson Trust Scholarship An endowed scholarship established to providesupport for students performing community service in Rhinebeck, New York

Felicitas S. Thorne Scholarship A scholarship given to a student from SmolnyCollege, Russia, who is participating in the Program in International Education(PIE)

William E. Thorne Scholarship A scholarship named for its donor and awarded to astudent who intends to enter the ministry

Leyla Turcihin Memorial Scholarship Awarded to a Bard Graduate Center M.A. or Ph.D.student interested in Islamic, ancient, or Asian decorative arts

Beth M. Uffner Scholarship A scholarship awarded to a student who has shownperseverance toward facing the challenges of pursuing a college education andwho displays serious interest in the arts

Hayden E. Walling Memorial Scholarship A scholarship established by Bartlett Chappell ’37 asa memorial to the kindness and generosity of Hayden E. Walling ’39. Awarded toa senior or rising senior with at least a 3.0 grade point average and who is indanger of not finishing his or her course of study due to financial hardship.

Paul Williams Scholarships Two scholarships awarded annually to a man and awoman of academic distinction who are interested in public service

Willowbridge Associates Fellowships Scholarships awarded to outstanding students at theBard Graduate Center

Werner Wolff Scholarship A scholarship given annually in memory of Dr. WernerWolff, professor of psychology at Bard from 1942 to 1957, by his formerstudents and awarded to a deserving student for excellence in the field ofpsychology or anthropology
