Bard Early Colleges

Transforming Secondary and Higher Education

Bard entered the early college reform effort in 2001 when it established the Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) in Manhattan in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Based on the model of Bard College at Simon's Rock, the nation's oldest early college, BHSEC promotes a rigorous course of study in which students begin college work at age 16. The BHSEC program is tuition free. The Bard Early College network has since expanded to several sites, influencing the College's programs in the U.S. and abroad.

Bard Early Colleges

The Bard Early Colleges are founded on the belief that many high school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. The Bard Early Colleges provide adolescents with a rigorous, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades at no cost to the student. Bard's early college model provides a seamless, affordable pathway for students to and through college.

Bard College at Simon's Rock

Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts has been a leader in the early college movement for more than 40 years. Simon's Rock is the only residential college in the country specifically designed to provide bright, highly motivated students with the opportunity to begin college immediately after the 10th or 11th grade, culminating in either the A.A. or B.A. degree.
