The Visitor Talks : Anthony Gross – Artist Urban Action & The Shrinking City

April 7, 2014 from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
CCS Bard Seminar Room 1

Anthony Gross (b.1968) is a digital artist and filmmaker who has exhibited internationally including Sharjah and Guangzhou Biennales and recently at The Pompidou in Paris.

He co-founded temporarycontemporary after graduating from Goldsmiths College and has since gone to develop a series of curatorial infrastructures and artist support structures along side his film works.

A 5-year curatorial partnership culminated with the Event Horizon Social Club, a social location for experimental events programming at The Royal Academy, London, 2009. Working this way led him to shift his practice from ‘curating exhibitions’ to designing ‘structures for enabling’, curatorial infrastructures that support independent artist projects and that take on real-world entrepreneurial strategies for survival.

He has created both grass roots and more high end ‘occupational infrastructures’ of studios, project spaces, with online radio, pop-up dining clubs, bands and bars, including The Old Police Station and Cartel, an invitational curatorial consortium housed in an installation of shipping containers.

Traveling to Detroit in 2011 to make, The Shrinking City, Gross developed a view of what he now calls Artist Urban Action where the individual artist can affect an urban political and economic landscape via curated spatial design and site-specific regeneration. Linking to ideas around Land Art, via Gordon Matta Clark, Walter Hopps and Ai Wei Wei, Gross produced Enclave, a new artist-run and self-sustaining and permanent infrastructure supporting 10 project spaces and residencies in Deptford, South London.

He is currently working between Detroit and London developing built, virtual and cinematic proposals, in particular: Cabin on The Lodge, in London – both a planned new physical building and virtual, avatar-based curated environment; and Hologram City, Detroit, a proposed outdoor landscaped cinema park for seasonal projections of artist film and performance.
