The CCS was the vision of
Marieluise Hessel, a woman whose energy, dedication, and collection
are the foundation stones of this institution. For her continuing
commitment to and involvement with the CCS, I extend my warmest
thanks.
My sincere gratitude goes to Leon
Botstein, president of Bard College, and Dimitri Papadimitriou,
executive vice president of Bard College, for ten years of committed
support.
I would like to acknowledge Marcia
Acita, assistant director, for the invaluable role she has played
in the life of the CCS, and for her work on this exhibition. My
thanks are also due to Colleen Egan, assistant registrar, for her
diligent stewardship of the collection; to Michael Pilon, preparator,
and Mark DeLura, for their capable work installing the exhibitions;
to Carol Anderson, administrative assistant, for managing the crucial
details; and to Elizabeth Fisher, curatorial assistant, for her
cheerful and wide-ranging assistance. I am grateful to Ann Gabler,
program development associate, and Barbara Maple, research associate,
Bard College, for their ongoing efforts with fundraising; and to
Emily Darrow, public relations associate, Bard College, for her
assistance with press and publicity for the exhibitions. Once again,
I am indebted to Ginger Shore, director, Publications and Public
Relations; Mary Smith, art director; Diane Rosasco, production manager;
Mikhail Horowitz, editor; and Francie Soosman, designer, of Bard
College Publications Office, for their marvelous work on the exhibition
materials and this publication.
As always, I am grateful to Norton
Batkin, director of the Graduate Program, for his support and friendship.
The curators of these exhibitions are all alumni/ae of the CCS Graduate
Program. It was a great pleasure to receive so many proposals from
alumni/ae, and in turn to work with Ilaria Bonacossa, Cecilia Brunson,
Rachel Gugelberger, and Tobias Ostrander, whose insightful exhibitions
have once again provided a forum for fresh engagements with the
Marieluise Hessel Collection.
