Academics at Bard CEP

The Bard Center for Environmental Policy's graduate programs combine an intensive course of study with practical training in preparation for environmental careers in nonprofit organizations, government, and the private sector. The programs emphasize methods of critical inquiry and provides the practical knowledge necessary to understand the legal, political, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethical forces that influence the decision making process. Graduates are ready to bring these assets, underpinned by a sense of social responsibility and commitment, to their future work.


M.S. in Environmental Policy

The program leading to a master of science in environmental policy provides future leaders with the knowledge and tools to create effective solutions to today's critical environmental challenges. Requirements of the two-year program include a year of interdisciplinary coursework, a 4-6 month internship, and a master's thesis.

Master's International Program

The Peace Corps Master's International (MI) Program offers students the opportunity to incorporate the internationally focused, hands-on experience of Peace Corps service into the Bard CEP master's degree program. Applicants to this program are encouraged to begin the Peace Corps application well in advance of enrollment. Students who are unable to undertake a Peace Corps assignment follow the standard two-year Bard CEP curriculum.

Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program

The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program allows returned Peace Corps volunteers to earn a master of science degree in climate science and policy or in environmental policy with tuition support. Fellows applicants apply normally to either master's program and must show proof of Peace Corps service to be eligible.

Dual M.S. and M.A.T. in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program at Bard College is a one-year intensive program leading to an M.A.T. degree and New York State certification to teach English, math, biology, or history. Students accepted into both programs first complete the first-year Bard CEP curriculum, then enroll in the MAT Program for a second year.

M.S. in Climate Science and Policy

The program leading to the master of science degree in climate science and policy (CSP) focuses on climate science, specializing in the interactions between climate change, ecosystems and agriculture. The CSP degree is a two-year program, which includes a required internship and a master’s thesis.

Dual M.S. and J.D. with Pace Law

This joint program, which combines Bard's innovative graduate curriculum with one of the nation's top-five ranked environmental law programs, offers students the opportunity to complete, in an accelerated period, a master of science degree from Bard--in environmental policy or climate science and policy--and a doctorate in jurisprudence with a certificate in environmental law from Pace Law School.

The 3+2 Program

The Center offers qualified undergraduates a 3+2 option that allows entry to the two-year master's degree program before they have completed their undergraduate degree. There are two 3+2 options: the Bard 3+2 program for qualified Bard students, and the "Junior Year at Bard" program for highly qualified sophomores nationwide.

Professional Certificate Programs

A professional certificate is awarded upon completion of the first year of courses in either MS program. Should the certificate recipient decide to continue toward the master's degree, either immediately or at a later time, second year course work and all other requirements must be completed within five years after matriculation.
