HVSN List Serve Disclaimer and Legal Rules

In their postings, HVSN list members are aware of and respect cultural, individual, and role differences, including those based on age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomic status.

The list is unmoderated. We do ask you to adhere to the Rules of the Road, listed below, which are designed to ensure everyone feels respected and welcomed and enjoys equally the benefits of the list, while minimizing unwanted traffic.

Subscribers who do not comply with the Rules of the Road will be contacted by the list administrator to explain the circumstances and/or issue a warning. Repeated violations of the guidelines will result in removal from the list. These guidelines will always be available on the Bard CEP website (here) in case you need to refer to them.

HSVN Rules of the Road

Rule 1: HVSN is a list designed to disseminate information about events and opportunities (including job postings, or other business-related opportunities) related to social justice and sustainability in the Hudson Valley. HVSN IS NOT A DISCUSSION FORUM. List members should not post their reflections on or responses to other’s posts on the list, but of course, are welcome to engage off-list with other member’s posts.

Rule 2: Postings should pertain to social justice or sustainability. Messages announcing other types of events and opportunities (e.g., unrelated theater performances, music events etc.) are not to be placed on the HVSN list serve.

Rule 3: Do not use the Forum to advertise products or services or for direct solicitations of list serve members to purchase products or services. In addition, do not use this list to solicit donations of any kind. This includes direct appeals for support, recruitment to join a Kickstarter or other campaign, encouragement to vote for a particular candidate in a competition with a financial prize, etc. Examples of messages that may be of financial benefit to list serve members or their organizations but are not prohibited include information about tickets to sustainability or social justice events, news of job listings or position openings, or information about professionally-related products or services where the list serve member conveying the information is not in the business of selling the products or services. Announcements that provide useful professional information to the list serve members but may also have some incidental commercial benefit to the sender (e.g. an author who is a list member merely advising the list of publication of a professional book) typically would not be “commercial” for purposes of this restriction.

Rule 4: Do not use this forum for any communication that could be construed in any way as support for or opposition to any candidate for a federal, state or local public office. The Federal law providing for Bard College’s tax-exempt status absolutely forbids the use of Bard sponsored resources or facilities, including this forum, in any way that would even appear to support or oppose such a political candidate.

Rule 5: “Personal reflections” upon other members, no matter how serious their differences over policy questions, is prohibited. Common courtesy and respect, which excludes personal attacks or criticism, must be observed. The listserv is a forum for sharing information and community building. It is a place where differences of opinion can be aired, however, with courtesy and respect.

Rule 6: Do not use the forum for illegal purposes, including, but not limited to, defamation, violation of intellectual property laws, or violation of criminal laws. Do not intentionally interfere with or disrupt other forum members, network services, or network equipment. Commercial use is prohibited, as is distribution of unsolicited advertising, chain letters, propagation of computer worms or viruses, and use of the network to make unauthorized entry into any other machine accessible via the Forum.

Sanctions for Violations of Rules

HVSN does not undertake editorial control of postings. However, in the event that any inappropriate posting is brought to the attention of the Moderator, the Moderator may take the following action.

  • The Moderator will send a warning directly to the violator, with a reminder of the rules, and an explanation of the violation. The Moderator will inform the violator that a second violation will result in suspension from the list.
  • In the case of a second violation, the Moderator will remove the violator from the list.

Please use the new list productively!

(We are grateful to the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences and the American Psychological Association whose listserv guidelines informed ours, and from whom some of our guidelines language is borrowed.)
