BROWN BAG: Bard Center for Environmental Policy’s Professional Development Skills Series

Each Friday during the semester, Bard CEP hosts a one-hour “Brown Bag” series for current CEP students and undergraduate Bard students enrolled in CEP courses with the goal of professional and community growth. Brown Bag workshop topics include presentation skills, resume and cover letter workshops, social media and personal branding advise, professional headshots, and team building.

The Brown Bag series started a few years after the inception of CEP in response to recurring interest and questions from students regarding career development opportunities. CEP Professor Caroline Ramaley, who organizes and runs the Brown Bag series, recognizes the importance of offering a dedicated time and space to work with students on cultivating transferable professional skills. “CEP is an experientially-oriented graduate program. The Brown Bag series fits into this hands-on approach to helping our students develop professionally as well as supporting them in finding the right internship and career path,” Ramaley explained.

Faculty from around campus offer their expertise. Most recently, Bard’s Dean for Social Action, Paul Marienthal, ran a team building workshop. Upcoming Brown Bags include “Using Social Media to Develop Your Personal Brand”, “Resumes and Cover Letters”, and “Using LinkedIn”.

These casual lunch-time meetings also give students the opportunity to come together to share their personal workplace experiences and to offer up constructive feedback to their peers. “Meeting with faculty and my fellow students weekly is teaching me the value of communication and strengthens my bond with my academic community,” CEP student Ben Volk shared.
