Organization Overview

The Northwest Forest Coalition is a partnership of conservation and fishing organizations seeking to secure increased protection of Oregon’s Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests, in part through the establishment of protected conservation areas on these state forests. Core members of the Northwest Forest Coalition include the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club, Wild Salmon Center, Association of Northwest Steelheaders, and Trout Unlimited.

Description

The Northwest Forest Coalition is seeking a driven, self-directed professional to serve as one of three contract organizers in the Pacific Northwest. The Grassroots Organizer will mobilize support in Washington County to press key decision makers for stronger conservation protections for state forests on Oregon’s North Coast. This position will advance the coalition’s organizing, advocacy, and public education efforts in Washington County and complement the work of other coalition organizers in Tillamook and Clatsop Counties.

Responsibilities

The activities of the Northwest Forest Coalition – Washington County Contract Organizer will include:

  •  Mobilize public support for state forest protections during Board of Forestry hearings and other public comment periods. Generate public turnout during public hearings.
  •  Coordinate with coalition partners through weekly coalition meetings, e-mails and conference calls.
  •  Build active grassroots participation in target counties through regular local meetings, hikes and events.
  •  Update web and social media sites utilizing coalition websites and social media pages.
  •  Encourage contacting of decision makers and media by target county residents.
  •  Table at community events, including farmer’s markets.
  •  Distribute literature to forest users at trailheads, campgrounds, boat ramps, etc.
  •  Create fact sheets and other materials to help educate decision-makers, the media and the public.
  • Circulate business sign-on letter supporting permanent protected areas

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum of three years experience working in conservation in Oregon, and/or grassroots organizing. This position requires a working knowledge of conservation issues in Oregon and a valid driver’s license. Candidates living and/or working in Washington County are preferred.
This position also requires some physical stamina and dexterity to lead hikes in rugged terrain. Requires ability to operate a keyboard, computer, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires ability to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Work is performed in the community and in an office environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and publishing software required.
