Description:

The Green Science Policy Institute (GSP) is hiring a Science and Policy Associate to contribute to our sceintific research and policy work reducing toxic chemicals in consumer products to protect human health and the global environment. GSP is looking for a motivated, organized, and capable individual to work with our dedicated team of science and policy experts.

The Associate will be hired on a 3-month contract with a longer-term commitment to follow, if mutually agreed, at the end of that period. The Associate should be available to work 30 to 40 hours/week primarily in our North Berkeley office. Start date is flexible after August 5.

Candidates who demonstrate success during the 3-month contract period will have the opportunity to become a part of the GSP team, play a key role in advancing GSP’s mission, and advance to a leadership position in our growing organization. Benefits may be available if candidate is hired for a longer-term commitment.

Responsibilities:

The Associate should be able to work with minimal supervision to:

  • Manage GSP projects such as the:
  1. Cancer-Free Couch Project – scientific and policy support for California and national policy for increased fire safety without flame retardant chemicals
  2. Green Building Initiative for safer and healthier building products
  3. International Flammability Standards project
  4. Blue Mountain project for novel approaches to toxics prioritization and reduction
  5. The Safe Kids campaign to reduce toxics in children’s products
  6. Responsible end-of-life disposal for electronics and funiture
  • Co-author scholarly papers, op-eds, and other publications
  • Develop educational and presentation materials
  • Aid in the preparation for GSP Symposia at UC Berkeley, nationally and internationally
  • Present at GSP events, scientific conferences, and other related meetings
  • Write grant proposals and help with development activities
  • (Desired) Maintain/develop organizational information technology resources

Qualifications:

Required:

  • An advanced degree in chemistry, biology, environmental engineering, public health, toxicology, environmental science, or a related field
  • Ability to take initiative, think creatively and solve problems
  • Efficient, organized, resourceful, and a proven track record of on-time delivery of high-quality work
  • Attention to detail, diligence, and persistence
  • Superb written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to research and synthesize information on scientific and policy topics
  • Work experience managing projects and people
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word, Excel
  • Passionate about our mission to protecting health and environment worldwide

Desired:

  • Work experience in chemistry, biology, engineering toxicology, public health and/or public policy
  • Experience working with industry, NGO’s and/or government
  • Experience researching and writing peer-reviewed papers
  • Familiarity with web-based communication technology and applications such as Google Apps and WordPress
  • Experience with Microsoft Access and/or database maintenance and development skills
  • Programming and/ or website maintenance and development skills
