Description:

The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks an intern to strengthen outreach and communications for Global Forest Watch 2.0, a forest monitoring and management system that unites satellite imagery, cloud computing, and human networks to protect forests worldwide. The intern will work from WRI’s Washington, D.C. office to build a social media presence for GFW 2.0, assist with writing and editing the GFW 2.0 blog, produce new outreach products, and write a report on key target audiences for Global Forest Watch 2.0. The intern will work in the People and Ecosystems program, but work closely with the External Relations department and staff experts to coordinate with the institute’s broader social media and communications efforts.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Forests Communications Officer and the Global Forest Watch 2.0 Senior Manager, the intern will:

  • Support GFW 2.0 outreach efforts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Work to build an audience for the GFW 2.0 spring/summer launch (date TBD), engage target audiences in online conversations, and establish the foundation for a strong, growing social network.
  • Develop a process and tools for tracking and sharing online coverage and social media conversations about GFW 2.0 and related issues to inform members of the GFW 2.0 team.
  • Help draft and edit material for the Global Forest Watch 2.0 blog. Primarily authors will be experts on the GFW 2.0 team, as well as partners. Help craft outlines and first drafts of stories, assist in managing the editorial process with individual partners, and copy-edit stories. Write a “weekly forest news
    round-up” post of relevant stories.
  • Post blog stories online, assist with online formatting and image selection. General assistance with graphic design and editing of GFW 2.0 map frames.
  • Author a report on key audiences for Global Forest Watch 2.0 in target countries, with examples and recommendations for successful outreach and crowdsourcing.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in international relations, journalism, public relations,
    communications, or a related field;
  • Interest in and commitment to environment and international development issues;
  • Proven knowledge of and/or experience working with the major social media networks;
  • Significant experience blogging, editing, or similar forms of online communication;

SKILLS:          

  • Strong written and oral communications skills in English (required) and a second language (preferred) [priority languages are Portuguese, Bahasa, French, and Spanish];
  • Strong computer skills, including basic knowledge of web and graphic design,
    experience with blogging platforms (WordPress, Tumblr, Drupal, etc.)
  • Experience representing an institution or organization on social media;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Ability to work calmly and enthusiastically under high pressure;
  • About to think creatively about all elements of communications work;
  • Highly responsible, motivated and has a good sense of humor.
