Organization Overview

For 19 years, Global Witness has run pioneering campaigns against natural resource-related conflict and corruption and associated environmental and human rights abuses. From Cambodia to Congo, Sierra Leone to Angola, we have exposed the brutality and injustice that results from the fight to access and control natural resource wealth, and have sought to bring the perpetrators of this corruption and conflict to book. Global Witness is headquartered in London and has a U.S. Office in Washington, DC. The U.S. Office’s research and advocacy efforts include focus in the following areas: tackling conflict minerals, combating corruption in the oil, gas and mining sector, addressing illicit financial flows and combating illegal logging and unsustainable forest use.

Description

Global Witness’ U.S. office is seeking an intern to start as soon as possible. Internships are geared towards current undergraduates, recent university graduates, and graduate students with a significant background in international relations, and research on natural resource governance, development, and conflict issues. Particular preference will be given to applicants with Washington advocacy experience. In order to support our general advocacy efforts, we also look for candidates with an interest and experience in tracking Congressional policy and developments (e.g. congressional calendars, legislation, hearings, committee assignments), and media coverage. Specific Hill or other office experience and language skills are a plus, but not a necessity. Washington-based interns interact with Global Witness’ international staff as well and may have the opportunity for in-depth research in areas of personal interest, in addition to a broad exposure to the DC policy community. We are looking for interns who can commit to 20-35 hours a week.

Responsibilities

Although each internship is slightly different, the following assignments are typical of a GW Washington internship:

  • Finding out about, attending, and reporting back on relevant Washington events and symposia, including Congressional hearings, policy dialogues, World Bank and IMF events.
  • Assisting with sector-related research, including oil, gas, mining, and forest industry publications and international affairs-related articles related to our work.
  • Conducting in-depth research on a particular issue or for a specific GW report.
  • Tracking relevant media
