Organization Overview

The Trust for Public Land is a national nonprofit that conserves land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, historic sites, rural lands, and other natural places. The Trust for Public Land works from the inner city to the wilderness, ensuring livable communities for generations to come. The great diversity of the work is best captured in three broad initiatives that together constitute the land-for-people mission: Parks for People; Working Lands; Land and Water.

Description

The California State Director is responsible for representing The Trust for Public Land and carrying out the mission of the organization in an effective, visionary and financially sound way throughout the State of California. S/he reports to the West Division Director, manages and mentors the California State Project and Program team of 30 individuals, and works in close cooperation with the State Philanthropy Director. The California state program is the largest in the country by staff size and revenue with an annual budget of approximately $12 million.

Additionally, s/he is responsible for oversight of state and local government relations; public finance strategies and implementation; coordinating the acquisition of real estate for conservation purposes in the state and its conveyance to public agencies, or other nonprofit organizations. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to function with a collaborative approach and an open mind, and demonstrate the ability to lead talented, independent, and accomplished people. The California State Director position requires an individual who understands the basis of the work performed by The Trust for Public Land, but operates at the big picture level bringing a “CEO’s thought process” to the role.

Qualifications

Minimum of ten (10) years related experience required including five years leading an organization, department, division, or program of significant or comparable size to the California State Office of TPL. Candidates who are familiar with conservation real estate practices, land conservation policy, public finance techniques, government funding practices, the foundation community, fundraising, marketing practices, best management practices, and budgeting/financial management are highly desirable. As this position covers the entire state of California, candidates must possess an ability and willingness to travel as required, and to work flexible hours outside a 9-5 schedule. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required and the preferred candidate will hold an advanced degree. A full position profile can be found here.
