Summary:

The Creating Healthy Places (CHP) Program Coordinator is responsible for implementing and overseeing the Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play Program in Brownsville, Brooklyn. This position will be housed within Community Solutions’ Brownsville Partnership (BP) initiative and will manage projects designed to increase places for physical activity within the community. S/he will also oversee projects to increase access to and use of healthy foods within the community in close collaboration with the BP’s primary CHP community partner, GrowNYC. The Program Coordinator will work with his or her GrowNYC counterpart to ensure that all program goals are met. The CHP Program Coordinator will also oversee all aspects of program evaluation and reporting in collaboration with his or her GrowNYC counterpart.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Implement projects in Brownsville to increase opportunities for residents to be physically active based on strategies as defined by a contract between Community Solutions and the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH).
  2. Coordinate program components to promote all four CHP strategies in partnership with GrowNYC and other stakeholders, including city agencies and elected officials. Facilitate meetings and conference calls and any other means necessary to sustain these productive ongoing collaborations.
  3. Manage day-to-day operations of the two CHP program recreation strategies, including oversight of consultants assigned to work on these strategies.
  4. Build broad-based support for the project among partners, stakeholders and community residents.
  5. Implement evaluation and reporting requirements and disseminate findings to key stakeholders, partners and sponsors.
  6. Manage project budget, prepare and submit vouchers and budget modifications in coordination with Community Solutions’ Finance Department, and in accordance with the NYS DOH contractually defined schedule and format.
  7. Participate in quarterly NYS DOH conference calls.
  8. Attend Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and/or NYS DOH meetings and training as required.

Other Duties:

  1. Supervise a Resource Specialist, a staff position that will provide support to residents by connecting them to appropriate resources, providing advocacy when necessary, and above all, empowering residents to solve their own problems and those of their neighbors
  2. Facilitate the development of, and implement, a community vision plan including vision, goals and objectives.
  3. Research and provide recommendations on community engagement opportunities.
  4. Assess the community capacity to deliver and manage programs and services.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and three years experience in similar position, Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  2. Background in public health; health planning; public policy; urban planning; community organizing; or related fields.
  3. Commitment to public health and chronic disease prevention, and demonstrated knowledge of obesity and type 2 diabetes prevention content.
  4. Experience in grassroots leadership development programs and working in low-income urban communities.
  5. Knowledge of and skills in environmental and systems change approaches; cultural competency, disability awareness, strategic planning; program development; coordination and management; community mobilization, and outreach.
  6. Commitment to developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with CBO partners and neighborhood stakeholders.
  7. Experience with database, statistical and GIS mapping software; tracking data; developing evaluation tools; conducting evaluations; and describing evaluation results.
  8. Superior facilitation, verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  9. Experience managing and reporting on budgets.
  10. Computer literacy with proficiency in database systems, web-based communications, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  11. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The position is responsible for supervising a Resource Specialist, as well as interns, consultants and volunteers as needed.

Physical Demands:

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear.
  2. The position requires extensive computer use so the employee must have sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen.
  3. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  4. Job can require at times long hours and work over weekends.
  5. Occasional long-distance travel is required to attend meetings, events, conferences and trainings.

Work Environment:

Position is based in Brownsville, Brooklyn at the offices of the Brownsville Partnership. Includes outreach in the Brownsville community, including in and around NYCHA housing developments and participants’ homes.
