Overview:

Slide Ranch is now accepting applications for 2014 Summer Teachers-in-Residence. Interviews will begin March 15th. Applications are accepted until positions are filled.

Mission:
Slide Ranch provides farm-based environmental education to San Francisco Bay Area youth and families that focuses on the principles of sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. By cooking, gardening, caring for animals and exploring the coastal ecosystems, visitors of all ages see the connection between a healthy food system and a healthy, resilient environment.

Slide Ranch Background:
Slide Ranch is a nonprofit educational farm and environmental preserve within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, where cultivated lands meet coastal wild lands. Located on the Marin coast, just a thirty minute drive north of San Francisco, Slide Ranch is a beautiful, isolated homestead perched on the rugged edge of the continent.

For over 40 years, Slide Ranch has been teaching children and families about the sources of food that nourish us and cultivating an environmental awareness of our planet’s limited resources. We serve more than 8,000 visitors a year, with a special emphasis on low-income, urban populations who have limited opportunities for nature-based learning. Slide Ranch is committed to providing hands-on opportunities for learning about food, farming, and the environment to people who otherwise would not have the chance.

Position:
Slide Ranch is accepting applications for the Summer Teacher-in-Residence internship. This is a residential “live-on-the-ranch” position – tent-housing and food provided, plus monthly stipend. This 12-week position challenges you to grow as a person and as a professional outdoor educator. You will gain valuable hands-on experience in agricultural and environmental education and learn how to live and work in a rural setting as a member of a community.

June-August, Slide Ranch hosts 10 weeks of day camp. Summer camp participants learn to care for farm animals and gardens, explore miles of wildland trails, discover ocean tide pools, cook, and participate in arts & crafts projects. Our Teachers-in-Residence customize each program to meet the learning needs of children 5 – 13 years of age.

Teachers-in-Residence lead groups of 8 students in 5-day experiential education programs. After the camp day, Teachers participate in afternoon sessions involving teacher meetings, gardening, animal care, and/or facilities maintenance. Occasional teacher observations complement the position.

Teachers are responsible for daily ranch chores outside of the 8-hour day. Residential responsibilities include weekly chores, cooking dinner for fellow residents twice each month, and monthly resident meetings.

Dates of Session: June 2 – August 22, 2014
Compensation: Tent-housing, healthy food, monthly stipend of $500, potential additional scholarship funding, and an opportunity to live with a group of people in a beautiful, rural setting. Applicants must be comfortable living in rustic accommodations.
