U.S. Policy Manager, 350.org – Washington, DC

Organization: 350.org

Position Title: U.S. Policy Manager

Location: Washington, DC

Hours: Full-time

Application Deadline: Position open until filled

Description: 350.org is looking for a skilled and energetic new hire based out of Washington, DC willing to do what it takes to win big victories on our national political priorities. This is a full time position. Title could be ‘U.S. Policy Campaigner,’ or ‘U.S. Policy Manager,’ depending on experience.

Responsibilities: In this position you would report to and work with 350.org’s U.S. Policy Director to help craft and implement political plans for our leading campaigns, from Keystone XL to fossil fuel divestment, to fracking. We’re looking for someone who can ghostwrite a divestment floor speech for a Senator, write a campaign plan for defeating a bad fracking bill in congress, and generally help maximize the political impact of 350.org’s U.S. campaigns.

This is a fast-paced environment and you’re going to be covering a lot of issues. You’ll be interfacing with all the tools in our toolbox: big grassroots actions, digital campaigns, media strategies, lobbying, electoral campaigning, and sometimes civil disobedience. If you’re looking for policy analysis job this isn’t the right position for you. We’re looking for a generalist who isn’t afraid of getting their hands dirty.

If you’re excited about unleashing the force of a growing social movement on our stale political system, you might just be the perfect fit.

Qualifications: Here are the required qualifications:

  • Exceptional communicator in English, with a pension for persuasion.
  • Fast and talented writer, in English – especially via email.
  • People-person who can artfully build relationships with decisionmakers, partners, 350.org staff, and our volunteer network.
  • Ability to become an expert on new issues quickly, from fracking to immigration reform.
  • Has nuanced understanding of the U.S. political landscape with an interest in shaking things up.
  • Familiar with climate and environmental issues.
  • Experience managing projects, teams, and volunteers.
  • Ability to write and implement plans.
  • Has deep-rooted desire to fight climate change
  • Advanced interpersonal communicator
  • Creative problem solver, including the ability to generate fresh campaign ideas.
  • Comfort working remotely with colleagues in multiple time-zones via skype, conference calls, and other online tools.

Big pluses include (we expect a successful applicant to have 2 to 3 of these):

  • 2-7 years of professional advocacy or political experience
  • Connections to the climate movement and other progressive political spaces including volunteer and professional networks.
  • Experience working in government or on political campaigns
  • Experience and competency working in multicultural groups
  • Familiarity with large-scale events or protests
  • Experience working with the press
  • Experience leading social media efforts, and other digital campaigns.
  • Fluency in Spanish

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others. Working at 350.org requires the ability to lead and follow. This particular position will be accountable to line management, campaign teams and their managers, and a grassroots base who trusts us to represent their interests in DC.

How to Apply: Apply online. Remember, you’re applying for an advocacy role where you’ll be spending a lot of time pressuring decision makers to adopt our views–so be persuasive! We’re looking for someone who can instantly capture our attention and make us want to read more.
