Position Title: IEC District Intern

Location: The incumbent will work part-time at the Interstate Environmental Commission Laboratory, College of Staten Island, Staten Island, New York and at various field locations throughout the Tri-State area.

Dates and compensation: Spring or Summer 2015; This is a paid position; it is estimated that the position will require 15 hours per week. The approximate start date is February 2, 2015 (for spring). It is anticipated that this position will extend to June 30, 2015, with a possible extension into summer.

Description: The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission serves as a forum for interstate communication and coordination on water related pollution control efforts among all the New England States and New York State.

In May 2012, NEIWPCC entered into an agreement with the IEC District to assist their three compact members (NY, NJ, and CT) in meeting their most pressing water resource, quality, and wastewater treatment concerns, both within and across state boundaries. NEIWPCC is working with the IEC District in meeting their diverse needs by providing fiduciary responsibility, staff and technical assistance, analysis and support for a broad array of water resource areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff to support IEC’s inspection program related to municipal discharges, industrial discharges, pump stations, and dry-weather CSO and MS4 discharges, including:

o Assist with pre-inspection tasks, including equipment calibration and maintenance, sterilization and preparation of bottles, coolers and sampling equipment.

o Assist with inspections at wastewater treatment plants and other industrial/municipal facilities, pump stations, and ORI sites, including sampling and analysis in the field as scheduled by Senior Manager.

o Assist with sampling analysis and bench work in the laboratory as needed.

o Assist with routine laboratory quality control activities and housekeeping.

  • Assist staff to support IEC’s monitoring program related to ambient water quality, short-notice sampling, and other projects, including:

o Assist with boat-based surveys.

o Utilize portable monitoring equipment to collect field measurements.

o Assist with collecting ambient water samples and assist with data collection and recording of field measurements.

o Assist with the preservation and transport of samples, as required.

o Assist with laboratory analyses in accordance with established procedures and methods.

  • Assist with public outreach and education and other projects, as assigned.
  • Assist with data entry, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education: Minimum of 3 years towards a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, biology, or closely related field. Ideal applicants will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and flexible with a willingness to work in laboratory and field settings.

Required:

  • Strong interest in environmental issues and desire to learn.
  • Prior field and laboratory experience
  • Excellent computer skills, including Excel and website experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable driving in and around the Tri-State Area (CT, NJ, and NY).
  • Knowledge of and experience with water quality sampling and analysis procedures.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

Desired:

  • Advanced computer skills, including Access and GIS software.
  • Knowledge and experience with aspects of water quality and watershed management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory and field quality assurance/quality control and safety procedures.
  • Experience with wastewater treatment facility inspection process/procedures.
  • Experience and capability in working with state and local water/wastewater agencies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal and state environmental laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of surface water hydrology.
  • Knowledge of wastewater collection and treatment plan engineering design and operation practices.
  • Knowledge of EPA and NYSDEC wastewater, stormwater, and CSO rules and regulations.
