Position Title: Climate & Air Technical Fellow

Location: Boulder, Colorado or Washington, DC

Dates and compensation: January 5, 2015 – December 31, 2015; 35 hours/week (full-time); $50,000 annual salary plus benefits.

Application Deadline: The Climate & Air Technical Fellow is a key member of our domestic Climate & Air team working in a high-intensity, fast-paced, multi-disciplinary setting to help provide technical support for development and implementation of strategies, laws and policies to clean the air and reduce global warming pollution.

Environmental Defense Fund is seeking a candidate with proven analytical and research skills to support EDF’s work to better characterize air emissions from the oil and natural gas sector and support efforts to reduce those emissions.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex analyses of datasets on emissions from oil and natural gas facilities, such as the annual EPA greenhouse gas inventory and company-reported emissions under EPA’s greenhouse gas reporting rule.
  • Maintain, expand and update EDF’s models and databases used to evaluate the climate influence of natural gas leakage and mitigation scenarios.
  • Apply excellent organizational, communication, and planning skills in preparing correspondence and reports, responding to requests for information, and helping to coordinate activities among staff members.
  • Perform literature reviews, research, and analysis synthesizing information on a variety of topics to inform and support development of policies to reduce emissions from the oil and natural gas sector.
  • Assist in drafting and revising highly professional and rigorous analyses on complex technical and policy issues including white papers, reports, formal comments on policy and regulatory proposals, presentations, fact sheets, briefings, and blogs.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in the natural sciences, engineering, or environmental science preferred, with some specific knowledge and experience with air emissions and mitigation technology for the oil and gas sector.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills; proficiency in statistical analysis
  • Experience with database software and strong computer proficiency. Preferred: Experience with geo-spatial analysis using ArcGIS or other similar program; programming skills; and advanced knowledge of Excel, including macros.
  • Exceptional personal organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and to support a multi-disciplinary team, using independent judgment required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work.
