Midwestern or Western Regional Intern, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation – Washington, DC

Organization: Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation

Position Title: Regional Intern

Location: Washington, DC

Dates and compensation: Flexible start date; paid

Application Deadline: Position open until filled

Description: The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) provides advice, support and information to members of Congress, governors and state legislators through its affiliation with the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (a bi-partisan group of more than 300 U.S. Representatives and Senators), the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus and the forty state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses that comprise the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses – all of whom are allies of sportsmen. This gives CSF a unique niche that is unparalleled by any other sportsmen’s organization.

Interns will have an opportunity to learn the importance of the public policy process on hunting, fishing and other conservation issues specific to the region in which they intern, and will spend time learning about federal and state legislative initiatives that impact sportsmen and fish and wildlife conservation.

Individuals selected for regional internships will work from a remote location of their choosing a majority of the time. CSF staff will delegate tasks as needed and will be available to provide guidance and mentorship to interns via telephone and email during regular business hours. Interns must be willing to utilize their own personal computer and provide their own workspace that includes high speed internet access. Interns selected for the program must be willing to meet face-to-face with supervisors on a weekly basis for the duration of the internship and will be expected to provide their own transportation in accordance with this requirement. Although exceptions to this arrangement can be made, preference will be given to candidates located within a one hundred mile radius of Denver, Colorado for the Western region internship and candidates located within the borders of Arkansas for the Midwestern region internship.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of individual interns will depend on the availability and interest of each intern and the needs of CSF at the time of employment. Typical duties include:

  1. Tracking state and federal legislation that impacts fish and wildlife conservation, including bills that relate to hunting, angling, trapping and recreational shooting.
  2. Conducting research on policy issues to inform CSF’s regional Managers and Directors, and assisting with the preparation of letters, policy briefs, and other supportive materials.
  3. Writing and assisting with the preparation of the NASC email newsletter and providing timely information to state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses.
  4. Assisting with the various CSF and state sportsmen’s caucus events.
  5. Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Preference to undergraduate or graduate students with a major and/or an interest in conservation/natural resource management and/or policy.
  2. Excellent research, writing, and oral communications skills.
  3. Available to work on a committed weekly schedule, preferably part-time for a minimum of three months.
  4. Ability to organize time, set priorities, and work under pressure while paying attention to detail.
