Position Title: Coordinator, Growing Farmers Initiative

Location: Pocantico Hills, New York

Dates and compensation: Stone Barns Center offers a salary commensurate with experience and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and 401k plans and paid time off.; This is a full-time, exempt position. Occasional evenings and weekends will be required.

Description: Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is a non-profit farm and education center located just 25 miles north of Manhattan in Pocantico Hills, New York. Stone Barns operates an 80-acre four-season farm and is working on broader initiatives to create a healthy and sustainable food system. Through our Growing Farmers Initiative, children’s education programs, and diverse public awareness programs, we work to change the way America eats and farms.

Stone Barns Center has an opening for a full-time Growing Farmers Initiative Coordinator, reporting to the GFI Director.

Through the Growing Farmers Initiative, Stone Barns Center aims to work with others to equip beginning farmers with the knowledge and hands-on experience to launch economically viable, ecologically resilient farm enterprises.

Responsibilities: The GFI Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating three of the department’s core programs, which include:

1) The annual National Young Farmers Conference

2) Hands-on technical workshops

3) Small-scale public conferences for beginning farmers

The GFI Coordinator will be responsible for implementing, innovating and making these programs achieve a level of excellence that is unsurpassed. Working in collaboration with the present team, s/he will contribute to additional high priority initiatives, including content capture for our Virtual Grange website, management and development of relations with partnership organizations and sponsors, and expansion of an extensive Apprentice Alumni Network. The GFI Coordinator will also assist with other assignments as they arise and help with development of future programming.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • 3+ years of experience in a related-field
  • Extensive experience in and passion for conference and event planning and coordination
  • Sound judgment, an ability to work independently, project management experience
  • Familiarity with agricultural issues and/or farm experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills and ease in talking to the public
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Technological proficiency in backend administration of online registration system, RegOnline, and proprietary website, social media and website management is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across all levels of an organization, independently and as a team member
  • A self-starter who thinks strategically and can find new and creative ways to enhance the GFI
  • Well-organized, detailed-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Commitment to and passion for Stone Barns Center’s mission
