Position Title: Director of Climate Policy & Legislation

Location: Washington, DC

Description: Voices for Progress seeks a Director of Climate Policy & Legislation to lead our advocacy to win and protect policies combating climate change, and to work on other issues as they arise. The ideal candidate will be a personable, strategic thinker with strong writing skills, attention to detail, and experience working as an advocate or on Capitol Hill to advance public interest legislative policy. This position will report to the Policy & Legislative Director.

Responsibilities:

Monitor and analyze federal legislation, regulations, and relevant polling

Research key issues; and strategize on the most effective way for Voices for Progress to maximize its impact on key policy and political issues, with a primary focus on combating climate change.

Develop relationships with executive branch and congressional staff, and guide Voices for Progress members in meetings with elected officials.

Research, write, and edit policy backgrounders and talking points for grass-tops members to use when they meet with or talk to elected officials.

Write policy email updates and policy materials for website.

Under contract to a legally non-connected PAC, provide assessments of candidate policy views in order to guide the candidate endorsement process.

Represent Voices for Progress at advocacy coalition meetings on climate and selected other issues with allies, and help to craft strategy for the movement.

This position is exempt from overtime rules, expected to work the appropriate and necessary time in order to complete key assignments and related tasks when needed. Schedules are flexible, but fulfilling these responsibilities frequently requires work on evenings and weekends.

Qualifications:

Five or more years of experience in climate policy or with the legislative process, ideally on Capitol Hill or in policy advocacy.

Expertise in climate policy, with understanding of recent federal initiatives like the EPA’s Clean Power Plan.

Excellent writing and oral communication skills

Significant research and strategy experience.

Ability to thrive in a small office that must respond to quick changes in legislative development
