Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) is currently accepting applications for the position of Environmental Compliance Specialist. This position ensures regulatory compliance at the power plants, relative to the city, county, state, and federal environmental regulations for air, water, occupational safety, and fire safety.

 

Responsibilities:

 

* Ensures cost effective power plant environmental compliance with all applicable regulations.

* Represents the Production Dept on all tours and inspections of the power plant and related facilities conducted by the DOH, EPA and USCG, and other environmentally related regulatory agencies.

* Directs the activities of company and contract personnel in environmentally related activities (oil spill clean-up, site remediation, preparation for site inspections, compliance monitoring and testing, etc.) as needed to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

* Keeps abreast of current and pending regulations by interfacing regularly with the Environmental Dept., and through individual study and applicant efforts.

* Secures and/or budgets for material or resources in keeping with federal, state and local laws to ensure environmental compliance in the power plants.

* Prepares environmental training program(s) for power plant personnel and conducts training on applicable regulations affecting the power plants.

* Create and maintain records and files for the various regulatory agencies as required.

* Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce in support of quality initiatives and Company values.

* Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused and well-informed workforce.

* Interacts with all employees and other internal and external suppliers and customers in a positive, supportive and collaborative manner, to ensure the fulfillment of Company strategic objectives.

* Assumes the duties of the Station Chemist in administration of power plant boiler water treatment program.

 

 

Knowledge Requirements:

* Thorough knowledge of Environmental Science or related field with emphasis on science and technology, normally acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.

* Extensive knowledge of power plant and/or industrial systems and processes.

* Thorough knowledge of applicable air, water, chemical, material, safety, and fire regulations at the city, county, state, and federal levels.

* Thorough knowledge of the applicable policy, legislative, compliance review, and enforcement agencies at the city, county, state, and federal levels regarding environmental compliance.

* Working knowledge of HECO’s information systems tools such as PC and mainframe hardware and associated software, such as spreadsheets, work processing, database management, etc.

* Knowledge of analytical chemistry as related to steam generators and its boiler components.

 

 

Skills Requirements:

 

* Must have excellent verbal and written skills and must be able to translate complex regulatory jargon into simple terms.

* Must be able to read and understand blueprints and other technical power plant drawings.

* Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with all levels of personnel.

* Must be able to read and understand highly technical information contained in instruction manuals, material safety data sheets (MSDS), reports, etc.

* Must have or be able to qualify for State of Hawaii driver’s license and HECO driver’s license to travel for tours, inspections or environmental compliance.

* Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

 

 

Experience Requirements:

* Several years (3 – 5) experience of power or industrial plant experience and training.

* Several years (3 – 5) of interpretation and application of environmental regulations in the power plant environment.

* Several years (3 – 5) experience in the chemistry field.
