The Bard College Music Program and Bard College Conservatory of Music present “Music Alive!with a Touch of Klezmer, Latin, and Blues” on Sunday, October 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the acoustically superb Sosnoff Theater. Joan Tower and Blair McMillen direct a dynamic mix of styles from around the world including those tinged with a flavor of klezmer, blues, latin, and American music by Piazzolla, Golijov, Tower, Schoenfield, Rzewski and Ewazen. The concert will feature more than 40 musicians and outstanding soloists from the Conservatory.
The program includes “Frostfire,” by Eric Ewazen, performed by the New Hungarian Brass Quintet; “Trio,” by Paul Schoenfield, performed by Renata Rakova, Yuan Ma, and Wei Zhou; “Angels,” by Joan Tower, performed by the Kalmia Quartet (The Moore Brothers and LeahGastler); “The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind,” by OsvaldGolijov, performed by Conor Brown, clarinet, and the Chimeng Quartet; “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues,” by Fred Rzewski, performed by pianists Shunyang Lee and Blair McMillen; and “Otono Porteño” and “Primavera Porteño” by Astor Piazzolla, performed by Shawn Moore, violin, and a string orchestra conducted by Joan Tower.

Violist and Conservatory Artist Fellow performs a recital with pianist Michael Bukhman. Works by Kodaly, Moor, Prokofiev, Bach, Paganini, Dvorak and Brahms (his Sonata No. 1 for piano and viola.)
Helena Baillie, violin and viola, was born in London to a musical family. She graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music where she studied violin and viola. Her 2008 New York violin recital debut at Bargemusic was hailed by The Strad magazine for its ‘brilliance and poignance.’ Helena has appeared in chamber music with Pinchas Zukerman and with the Beaux Arts Trio at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. She has performed at Carnegie Hall in the Alexander Schneider Series and given recitals throughout Europe and the United States. She is the recipient of numerous awards, among which, the Barenreiter-urtext prize at the 2004 Munich ARD competition as well as prizes at the 2001 Banff and 2003 Tertis competitions. Her performances are regularly broadcast on Performance Today for American Public Radio. The first violinists of the Guarneri, Emerson, Vermeer, Juilliard and Tokyo quartets were Helena’s teachers: Arnold Steinhardt, Philip Setzer, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Robert Mann and Peter Oundjian. She studied viola at Curtis with Roberto Diaz and Joseph de Pasquale, and with Wilfried Strehle, principal viola, Berlin Philharmonic. Isaac Stern, Lorand Fenyves, Felix Galimir, and Leon Fleisher guided Helena in chamber music. Upcoming performances include a trip to Laos, Southeast Asia, where she will perform chamber music and outreach concerts for the Music Sharing organization, founded by violinist Midori.

Graduate Vocal Arts Program Concert: "First Songs"
Internationally renowned soprano and Vocal Arts Program artistic director Dawn Upshaw will give a recital with pianist and head of program Kayo Iwama, the singers of the program, and the Collaborative Piano Fellows. Program includes Joan Tower’s first piece written for voice, selections from John Harbison's Mirabai Songs, as well as new works composed by current students and recent alumni of the Bard Conservatory: John Boggs, Conor Brown, Ben Pesetsky, Matt Schickele, Shen Yiwen, Stefan Weisman. Bach’s timeless Goldberg Variations, interpreted by dancers to a string trio transcription by Dmitry Sitkovetsky. Preceded by a short musical prologue of works by Hanns Eisler and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and two of Bach’s irrepressibly danceable Inventions. With an unconventional staging to create a warm, inclusive setting, performers and audience are side by side on the stage of the Sosnoff Theater, removing the traditional divisions of artist and audience. “John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera and Selected Handel Arias,” featuring the satirical operetta that royally skewered 18th-century political realities and economic meltdowns, together with arias from Handel operas. International competition prize winner Jue Wang gives piano recital. Works to be performed include Ravel’s Sonatine and Miroirs, the Brahms Intermezzi Op. 117, a selection of Liszt etudes, and Liszt’s arrangement of the Tchaikovsky Polonaise from Eugene Onegin.
Born in Shanghai, pianist Jue Wang has been concertizing regularly in his native country since the age of ten. Recent First Prize and Gold Medal winner of the XVI Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition, Mr. Wang is rapidly garnering attention as a gifted young performer who has already made successful debuts at many prestigious venues around the globe.
As winner of the Santander Competition, Mr. Wang receives a generous cash prize, a recording distributed by Naxos and an extensive 2009-2010 recital tour, with more than 100 performances offered through the competition. Highlights include debuts at New York’s Carnegie Hall and London’s Wigmore Hall. Additional recitals are scheduled for Hannover NDR Hall in Germany, Bilbao Sociedad Filarmónica, Zaragoza Auditorio de Congresos in Spain, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Warsaw’s Penderecki and Santander’s International Festivals, as well as venues in Switzerland, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Panama and Mexico. Mr. Wang is slated for concerto performances with the Oviedo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Spanish Radio and Television, Murcia Regional, Colombia National and National Dominican Republic Symphony Orchestras.
During the 2008-2009 season, Jue Wang presented his Madrid debut recital at the Auditorio Nacional de Música and his Valencia concert debut at the Palau des Arts, performing with the Palau des Arts Orchestra and Maestro Zubin Mehta. He gave recitals at the Ubeda International Festival, Santander Palacio de Festivales, Klavierfestival Ruhr in Germany, Sintra International Festival in Portugal, Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, the Cordoba Rafael Orozco International Piano Festival and performed the inaugural concert at the Badajoz Festival Ibérico. Critics have praised his “self-confidence and concentration on the stage…his confidence and maturity are evident during his performances” (Diario Cordoba) and have highlighted his “Virtuoso abilities, [he] read with unusual clarity and brilliance” (Heraldo de Aragón).
In addition to the Santander prize, Mr. Wang also received First Prize at the 51st International Piano Competition Maria Canals in Barcelona. Mr. Wang received a Masters Degree in 2009 from the Shanghai Conservatory. He is currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music with Dr. Marc Silverman in the Artist Diploma Program.

An unusual semi-staged evening of American songs at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck. Three singers – soprano Rachel Schutz, mezzo Solange Merdinian, and tenor Sung Eun Lee – join pianist Sungha Lee for Three Lives at an Intersection. The songs bridge the worlds of Broadway and the concert hall; they also help people to make connections with each other. The composers include William Bolcom, George Gershwin, Dominic Argento, Cole Porter, Ned Rorem, and Marvin Hamlisch.

Composing Song: Preview Performance of New Commissions by Emerging Composers: Osvaldo Golijov and Dawn Upshaw Professional Training Workshop
This preview performance is the culmination of a two-part Professional Training Workshop, in partnership with The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, which commissioned eight young composers to write new vocal works for the 18 singers also selected to participate. Thirteen of the singers are students in the graduate program in vocal arts at The Bard College Conservatory of Music, and five singers were chosen by competitive application. These composers and vocalists, under the guidance of composer Osvaldo Golijov and soprano Dawn Upshaw—who have collaborated on such acclaimed new works as Ayre and Ainadamar—have rehearsed and developed the new commissions for a week in October at Bard, and come together again to preview the final compositions at Fisher Center before their premiere on May 9th and 10th at Carnegie Hall.
Composers participating in this workshop include: Jeremy Flower, Judd Greenstein, Matti Kovler, Lena Langer, David T. Little, Paola Prestini, Kate Soper, and Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin.

About Professional Training Workshops Professional Training Workshops presented by The Weill Music Institute are designed for artists between the ages of 18 to 35 and offer a unique opportunity for young musicians to explore performance and rehearsal practices, as well as specialized repertoire with some of today’s leading artists. Workshops include master classes and sessions of intensive performance preparation for emerging professional musicians, led by artists from many different musical styles and backgrounds. Most workshops feature at least one element that is accessible to the public in the form of a concert or open master class. Travel and housing for participants traveling from outside of New York City is arranged and paid for by Carnegie Hall. On Saturday, June 13, the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle presents the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, “one of the best-blended, most sensitive and intelligent piano trios in the world today” (New York Times). The trio—pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson—perform an all Schubert program: G minor Sonatina for violin and piano, Arpeggione Sonata for cello and piano, and Piano Trio in E-flat major, op. 100.

Bard College Conservatory of Music Benefit: Two One-Act Operas
Two evenings of opera, directed by Doug Fitch, featuring the world premiere of the Conservatory-commissioned one-act opera A Bird in Your Ear, by David Bruce, and the first fully staged abridged, one-act version of Virgil Thomson’s Four Saints in Three Acts. Individual tickets are $15, $25, and $50* (*includes priority seating and a pre-performance reception with the artists on March 21).
A Bird in Your Ear, with libretto by Alasdair Middleton, is based on a Russian folk tale called “The Language of the Birds,” which explores the importance of listening to nature, of forgiveness, and much more. Commissioned by The Bard College Conservatory of Music, the opera features soprano Kristin Ezell as Narrator I, soprano Melissa Wegner as Narrator II, mezzo-soprano Tania Maria Rodriguez as Narrator III, soprano Chanel Wood as Nightingale, soprano Yulia Van Doren as Bird with Golden Plumage, soprano Rie Miyake as Princess, tenor Sung Eun Lee as Ivan, and bass-baritone Yohan Yi as Captain, Merchant, and King.
Four Saints in Three Acts, with libretto by Gertrude Stein, is the first fully staged production of the one-act abridged version created by Thomson in 1954 for a commercial recording. Without a traditional plotline, the opera is based on the religious life of St. Teresa of Avila, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and the younger saints who are their companions and students, including St. Settlement (St. Teresa’s confidante) and St. Chavez (St. Ignatius’ aide-de-camp). This production includes soprano Maghan Stewart as St. Teresa I, mezzo-soprano Solange Merdinian as St. Teresa II, soprano Rachel Schutz as St. Settlement, tenor Patrick Cook as St. Chavez and St. Stephen, baritone Yang Yang as St. Ignatius, mezzo-soprano Julie Anne Miller as The Commère, and bass-baritone Yohan Yi as The Compère.
