Movement and Alexander Technique InstructorJudith Grodowitz is an Alexander teacher and movement artist with twenty years experience teaching the Alexander Technique. She teaches individuals and groups in NYC and travels internationally teaching workshops.
Judith was on the faculty of the New School Drama School graduate program (formerly named the Actors Studio Drama School) from 2000-2007. She currently is a theater production consultant, and guest coach for theater and music students through the Vassar College Theater Department, and teaches Alexander for Actors at the William Esper Acting Studio, NYC. Judith teaches master classes in Alexander and Improvisation annually at ImPulsTanz, a premier European contemporary International Dance Festival in Vienna, Austria, and presents workshops in Greece incorporating mythology, improvisation and Alexander. For a decade, she worked extensively with visual artists at the Penland School of Art, N.C.
Ms. Grodowitz coaches many professional performers via the Alexander Technique – recently including Tony Award nominee (Best Actress) Lisa Kron for her role in the Broadway production of Well. She has presented classes for performers at many venues, including the New York Theater Workshop and Dia Center for the Arts, NYC. In addition to her work with performers, Ms. Grodowitz has tailored Alexander presentations and workshops in a wide variety of settings for diverse populations, including: corporate, medical, visual arts, massage therapists, Pilates trainers.
Judith brings 30 years of involvement with the study and performance of movement arts to her teaching. She originated leading roles as a longtime member of the Obie Award winning company (Best New American Play) Skyfish Ensemble, directed by Lee Nagrin, and has performed with a variety of NYC choreographers. Judith has trained extensively in a variety of contemporary movement and dance forms (technical and improvisational). Her years as a member of Skyfish Ensemble helped form her approach to the creation of new work, use of imagery, and character development – contributing to her Alexander work with performing artists.
Judith received her Alexander training at ACAT, NYC certifying in 1987, and has continued post-graduate studies with many leaders in the international Alexander community. In 2003, she completed a year-long advanced training certification in The Art of Breathing, led by Jessica Wolf and based upon the work of breathing innovator Carl Stough. She studied with Mr. Stough for one year, prior to his death in 2000. Many years studying the Bartenieff Fundamentals make this an abiding element in her teaching. A lifetime of involvement with visual arts, language and movement inspires her work. B.A, U. of MD. Certified member, AmSAT.
