Stephen Hammer
oboeStephen Hammer, oboe, was a student of Robert Sprenkle, James Caldwell, and Fernand Gillet, and a graduate of Oberlin College. He enjoys a varied career playing and teaching oboes of all periods. He is principal oboist of the New York Collegium, Boston Handel and Haydn Society, Concert Royal, Clarion Concerts, the Bach Ensemble, and the Columbia Festival Orchestra, and is a regular participant at the Aston Magna festival and in productions of the Metropolitan Opera. His more than 150 recordings appear on Decca L'Oiseau-lyre and many other labels. In addition to Bard, he has taught at the Longy School of Music, Indiana University, Boston University, and New England Conservatory as well as the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute and the Brixen (Italy) /Akademie Musik und Kirche/. He was co-founder of the New York Collegium and served as its first artistic director, and also collaborates with the instrument-maker Joel Robinson in building replicas of historical oboes.
