InternationalTOEFL or IELTS test results are required for students for whom English is not the first language or the language of instruction. Because we do not have a full-scale English as a Second Language program at Bard, it is critical that all students, domestic and international, have the appropriate level of English fluency before they arrive on campus. We read every application in full, with particular attention to the candidate’s essays and recommendations.
We require all international students to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language.* Test score guidelines: TOEFL score of at least 600 (paper-based) or 100 (Internet-based). We also accept the IELTS instead of the TOEFL, with a band score of no less than seven.
*Students who have spent the majority of their secondary education in an English-medium program may be eligible for a waiver of the language testing requirement.
Other evidence of English-language proficiency will be accepted only with the approval of the Graduate Admission Committee. An application is considered incomplete and cannot be acted upon until all the materials listed above are received. The deadline for TOEFL submissions is February 15.
