Bard College at Simon's Rock

Director of Admission

“Simon’s Rock students – Rockers – are a remarkable group: Energetic, curious, and passionately interested in ideas. Students pursue their interests deeply. . .unabashed enthusiasm for learning is not just customary, it’s celebrated.”   --Provost Peter Laipson, Ph.D.

Bard College at Simon’s Rock, the nation’s only four-year, residential college of the liberal arts specifically designed to provide bright, highly motivated students with the opportunity to begin college immediately after the tenth or eleventh grade, seeks a creative, bold, and resourceful enrollment leader to serve as Director of Admission.   This is a unique opportunity to apply background and expertise in admission to a distinctive challenge. Located in Great Barrington, in the beautiful Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, the College enrolls approximately 400 students in Associate and Bachelor degree programs. The director will report to the dean of the college.

The Opportunity: The College seeks an experienced enrollment professional who has the desire to work with bright adolescents and who appreciates their intellectual talent, creativity, and boldness of vision. Faculty and staff alike are dedicated to working with students with an entrepreneurial approach to their own education, and the College seeks a director who shares a commitment to this vision.

The director will lead an admission staff to educate families about the value of early college and the extraordinary level of academic and personal support Simon’s Rock offers its students. Working in a highly collaborative environment, s/he will establish both short and long-term enrollment goals designed to grow and shape the entering class. The director is also a primary spokesperson for admission on campus; s/he must be adept not only at implementing the recruitment plan but also at communicating it to the entire college community.

The College: Founded in 1966, and a part of Bard College since 1979, Simon’s Rock is based on the premise that some bright, motivated students are ready for serious intellectual work at age 16 or 17. Students choose from over 40 concentrations and enjoy considerable flexibility in the curriculum. The college has an 8:1 student to faculty ratio, with classes averaging 10 students. 30% of the student body are people of color, and the broad range of cultural, ethnic, and geographic diversity found on campus is a point of pride. One member of the Simon’s Rock community described “Rockers” as “students not motivated by grades but by ideas, the prospect of knowing more, making connections, surprising themselves, applying their brains to thorny problems and complicated issues.” Faculty members frequently comment on how energized they are to be working with students focused in this way. Considerable investment in building over the last 15 years has resulted in attractive and highly functional physical facilities.   The admission office is housed in Blodgett House, an appealing, historic building situated in the heart of campus. Qualifications, Experience, and Personal Qualities: Candidates should have a record of progressively responsible experience in college or secondary school admission. The successful candidate will also be ready to push beyond typical recruitment channels to identify these students who desire a transformative place and who will flourish at Simon’s Rock.   Candidates should also have: a demonstrated capacity for collaboration; creativity in utilizing multiple strategies to attract well-matched students; successful supervisory experience, including the ability to build a cohesive team and motivate others; experience in using data to plan, inform, and evaluate decisions; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; ability to work flexible hours in a highly fluid environment; experience working with international students; knowledge of integrated marketing and brand communication; broad intellectual curiosity and flexibility, creativity, and a sense of humor. Familiarity with Banner or other higher education enterprise systems will be a plus. A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree preferred.

Great Barrington, Massachusetts: Located in western Massachusetts near the New York and Connecticut borders, Great Barrington is a town of 8,000 recently named the #1 small town in America by Smithsonian Magazine. The Berkshires, thickly forested hills that stretch across western Massachusetts, provide access to great skiing, hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities, while the region’s proximity to both Boston and New York City ensures significant sophistication and culture. Simon’s Rock is a short drive from Williams, Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, Bard, and UMass-Amherst.
