Paul Hembree

B.M., University of Oregon; M.M., University of Colorado at Boulder; Ph.D., University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Paul Hembree is a composer, technologist, and educator who works in the borderlands between experimental music and interactive technology. Recent projects include the score and sound design for the game Goodnight City Traffic; Cerebral Hyphomycosis, a duo for real and virtual cellists, premiered by Tyler J. Borden; and Apocryphal Chrysopoeia, a live audiovisual media piece that was featured at the 2016 New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, as part of the New York Philharmonic's biennial celebrations. He has collaborated with many prominent performers of new music, including the JACK Quartet, Irvine Arditti, the International Contemporary Ensemble, Ensemble Signal, and the Callithumpian Consort. Honors include numerous travel grants from UCSD and the University of Colorado; the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Thomas Nee Commission Prize; Red Note Competition Chamber Orchestra Division finalist; and American Music Center (New Music USA) Composer’s Assistance Program Grant. He previously served as a lecturer in game studies and interactive media programming at Skidmore College; he also taught composition, video game music and sound design, and Renaissance music in Western Europe, among other subjects, at UCSD.
