Primary Academic Program: Theater and Performance


BA, McGill University; additional studies at Università di Roma “La Sapienza.” Sophia Michahelles is artistic director and cofounder, with Alex Kahn, of the nonprofit arts ensemble Processional Arts Workshop (PAW), which creates site-specific, community-built art parades, processions, and immersive performances that integrate pageant puppetry, mobile architecture, and illuminations/projections. Recent works include Cabinet of Curiosities, Reverie, and Shine, among many PAW creations to open New York’s Halloween Parade; Bloom, an immersive performance at Miami’s Vizcaya Museum; White House Halloween, commissioned in 2016 for President Obama’s open house for military children; High Line opening procession; and Migration, an immersive puppet performance of native butterflies for the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Related performances and exhibitions at the Katonah Museum of Art, Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, and Basil Twist’s Symphonie Fantastique, an underwater puppet production that has run in San Francisco, Montreal, London, Munich, Chicago, and Buenos Aires, among other sites. Artist residencies include Kamov Artist Residency in Croatia; CEC Arts Fellowship at Les Kurbas Arts Center and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine, and Caribbean Contemporary Arts Residency. Articles and reviews of Michahelles’s work have appeared in Hypoallergic, Houston Chronicle, New York Times, Time Out New York, New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, and the Routledge Companion to Puppetry and Material Performance.
