Biography:B.A., Bennington College; M.A., D.M.A., Columbia University. Fellowships and awards: National Endowment for the Arts, Guggenheim Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, Koussevitzky Foundation, American Academy of Arts and Letters, “Meet the Composer”/Reader’s Digest. Won Grawemeyer Award for Distinguished Composers (1990); awarded Letter of Distinction from American Music Center (2008); has received commissions from New York Philharmonic; National, St. Louis, Chicago, and Pittsburgh Symphonies; Emerson, Tokyo, and Muir Quartets; Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio; and Carnegie Hall, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Aspen, La Jolla Summerfest, Music at Angel Fire, and others. Orchestral work, Made in America, performed by 65 orchestras in 50 states in project sponsored by American Symphony Orchestra Leagues and Ford Motor Fund Company; recording won three Grammy Awards (2008). Has CDs on Naxos, Koch International, Delos, d’Note Records, other labels. Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2004); American Academy of Arts and Letters (1998). Composer in residence, St. Louis Symphony (1985–88); Orchestra of St. Luke’s (1997–2007). At Bard since 1972.
