Study Abroad/Study Away
What to Anticipate
When you study in another country, you will participate in a different cultural and social world and often an unfamiliar academic culture. If you respect your host culture and approach the experience with an open and curious mind, your efforts will be rewarded. Even if you make a few social and linguistic mistakes, your hosts will appreciate your willingness to respect and accommodate their society.
There will be differences in food, lodging, everyday amenities, social customs and expectations, and access to resources. Before you go and while you are there, you should learn as much as you can about the customs and culture of your host country.
Studying abroad through Bard is intended to be culturally immersive; you won’t be isolated in a population of American students abroad. Bard’s programs offer the opportunity to develop new perspectives on your own culture, so keep your ears open to the diverse points of view you encounter, reserve judgment; and explore new ideas. Bard students are expected to engage in academic dialogue and develop their own ideas at home, and they are equally expected to bring that openness of mind to their studies abroad.

Important Documents
You should obtain a valid passport well in advance of your trip. Do not put this off until the last minute, as delays in processing may interfere with your plans. Some countries require that visiting foreign students obtain visas and/or study permits. Find out whether you will need a visa or study permit and, if so, how to obtain one. You may also need medical documentation, a letter verifying your enrollment in an academic program, or proof of health insurance. You should discuss all of these issues with the appropriate Bard office.

What to Bring
In general it’s a good idea to travel light. If you intend to work on your Senior Project or conduct research in a particular area, you should think about what resources you will need. Find out whether your computer or appliances will be usable in your host country before you pack them. Find out what clothes will be appropriate and comfortable and pack accordingly. If you will be staying with a family in the host country, you may want to consider bringing a gift.
